Temperament and Characteristics

They are happy, cheerful and friendly dogs who are quite energetic and alert. They are great family dogs and get well along with people. They make a playful companion to children, but adult supervision is recommended when around young babies or toddlers.

Fourche Terrier dogs are intelligent and inquisitive by nature. They may get suspicious and wary of strangers thus making excellent watchdogs. This trait is inherited from its parent’s both of which are good at watching and guarding.

They tend to be controlling, temperamental or stubborn, so its best to train them from a young age to make them even-tempered and obeying.

Care ~ Exercise

The furry Fourche Terriers are energetic and lively and need a good amount of exercise or playtime to be both mentally and physically stimulated. A daily walk or running session of 60-90 minutes will keep them occupied and away from boredom. They are interested in playing with toys, swimming, chasing balls, playing frisbee, etc to keep them entertained.

Grooming

The Yorkie West may be a high maintenance dog. Their thick coat requires regular brushing while the hair around the ears, eyes, and feet need occasional trimming. To keep tidy their coat shiny, and free from dirt, bathe them when necessary.

These dogs are prone to skin conditions so you should only use a mild shampoo or soap as suggested by your vet. Check and clean their ears once a week to keep them infection free and avoid wax build-up. Other grooming tips are the general ones, including trimming their nails and brushing their teeth regularly to avoid dental infections.

Health Problems

This is a fairly healthy crossbreed, which may be prone to any of the diseases that occurs in its parent breeds. Theaverage life expectancy for this dog is 12 to 15 years, which is the typical lifespan of most dogs this size. The owners, therefore, should take them from responsible breeders.

Some common health issues may include;

Cataracts

Patellar Luxation

Progressive Retinal Atrophy

Hypoglycemia

Lung Diseases

Training

The Fourche Terrier can at times act stubborn and commanding, so its best to train your dog from its puppyhood. It is important to teach them to be even-tempered and well-behaved with small kids. Positive reinforcement and socialization from early days make them well-rounded dogs who readily obey commands.

Obedience Training: This breed is quick to pick commands and hence training them to obey commands like “come”, “sit”, “stay” is not a difficult task.

Feeding/Diet

Owing to its high energy and activities, this dog’s diet is more than other dogs in their size category. A full-grown Fourche Terrier needs 1-2 cups of quality dry food every day, divided into two small meals. You should keep a check on your dog’s weight to ensure they don’t overeat and gain weight. Gaining weight can be detrimental to the dog’s health. A well-balanced diet and clean drinking water will be apt for this cute pooch to keep healthy.

Unlike other designer breeds, which are half of one breed and half of the other breed, Frenchtons are 75 percent French bulldog and 25 percent Boston terrier.

The main reason for the breeders to cross French bulldog and Boston terrier is to eliminate the chances of possessing genetic disorders that are common in purebred dogs.

History of Frenchton Dogs

Started off in 1990, the purpose of the Boston Terrier French Bulldog Mix design was to eliminate the physical hazards of the French bulldog and to bring more stamina and mass.

Acknowledged as Faux Frenchbo Bulldog, soon became popular, due to their resistance ability to a genetic disorder that was common in the parent breed.

However, Frenchton puppies were more related to one of their parent breed than the other parent breed and most of the Frenchton puppies didn’t look alike.

This instability among the cross failed them to get registered as a new breed until after many generations of breeding, one can expect the genetic stability inherent in the purebred animal.

Temperament and Personality

The basic characteristic of this Designer dog crosses will exhibit both parent breeds to varying degrees.

Having genes from two of the great companion breeds, Frenchtons are blessed with the amusing and antic personality of the

French bulldog which loves to be independent as well as intelligent and obedient like the Boston terrier, always ready to please the owner.

In general, a Frenchton puppy craves for human companionship. They make great pets and goes well with kids especially grown-up kids. T

hey can be quite energetic and playful at times, but they also love to cuddle with their human owners.

Care ~ Exercise, Grooming & Health Issues

Having a playful nature the Frenchtons sometimes have laid back attitude, making them well suited for an apartment lifestyle.

Similar to their parent breed, a little amount of jogging and daily exercise is sufficient to keep them physically and mentally stable.

Like a walk in the dog park or engaging them in some interesting indoor games is perfect for them.

Just like their parents, the Frenchtons are not well suited to any extreme climatic conditions, so taking them to scorching heat or the chilling cold weather is not recommended.

Exercise

As discussed earlier, the Frenchton Dog have laid back attitude like their parent so a little amount of daily exercise or engaging than in some fun game makes them active and physically sound.

This minimum exercise requirement of Frenchtons makes them popular among various family living in apartments and bungalows.

Grooming

The grooming of the Frenchton Puppies is a real simple job since they have short hair they do not require regular brushing.

Bathing can be done not on a regular basis if you can wipe the dog’s coat regularly with a damp cloth.

Although the nails need to be clipped frequently like once in 14 days and regular brushing the teeth helps to avoid tooth decay.

Health Problems

One of the main problems possessed by Faux Frenchbo Bulldog is connected to the respiratory system.

By crossing the French bulldogs with the Boston terrier, these respiratory issues are reduced giving the offspring more stamina than its parent French bulldogs.

But, the genetic problems experienced by both the French bulldog and the Boston terrier can crop up in the following generations.

Life expectancy for Frenchton dog is around 12 to 15 years. Frenchton puppies are a designer mix that in many cases combines the best of both purebred parents.

The offspring tend to be healthier than the purebred parents, although few genetic abnormalities can crop up in future generations.

Frenchtons tend to be more massive than a Boston terrier, but they retain the energy and athleticism of the Boston.

They have reduced respiratory problems when compared with the French bulldog, and they experience fewer eye problems than the Boston terrier.

Training of Boston Frenchie

Although the Frenchton dogs are intelligent and obedient in nature, sometimes they can show stubbornness, making it a challenging job to train them.

However, a firm and tactful trainer will be able to handle this carefully. There are few tricks which help to bring out the playful nature of the Frenchton dog are to teach them the “paw trick” where the dog will learn to shake hands and sit on command.

To make the dog shake hand you need to reach out your hand to the dog’s paw and pronounce any word like “paw”, try repeating the same exercise for some time till it understands what you are saying, keep a treat to encourage the dog.

Next one can teach various commands like sit and stand by keeping the treat close to the nose of the dog and make it move upwards by tactfully moving the treat so that the dog follows the treat by lowering its back making it on a sitting posture.

Repeating the exercise numerous times will make the dog mastered the command
