They have thick and dense coat, which is medium sized and usually straight. The coat color may vary from white, black, brown, cream or a combination of any of the two.

They have brown round eyes which are very expressive, and floppy ears, a pointed muzzle and are active dogs always ready to play around.

Temperament

These incredibly loyal dogs will take no time to be your favourite. They have a lovable personality and are known for their, mild, calm, trustworthy nature. They are very affectionate to the family members, kids and other pets and thus make ideal family and companion dogs.

The Saint Berner is not an aggressive dog although their massive size may be enough to deter any prowlers. Quiet, thoughtful, yet kind of goofy at times – this gentle dog relishes time with the family and will be a loyal and devoted companion.

However, these dogs may be stubborn at times and have temperamental issues. Try to deal with the stubbornness with patience and positive enforcement techniques. These dogs have a habit of drooling.

The Saint Bernese is not an apt choice for apartment style living owing to their huge size. A house with a backyard will suit their temperament. These dogs are adaptable to most climates except the extreme heat because of their dense double coat.

Care ~ Exercise

The Saint Bernese is a highly active breed which needs at least an hour of physical activity and exercise per day to keep him mentally and physically stimulated.

Daily walks, jogging and running around the park will be great for your pet and will help him socialize with people and other dogs as well. This will keep his energies channelized and help them to be even-tempered and not develop restlessness or temperamental issues.

These dogs are a a perfect choice active families and love to enjoy games and playtime with children although their size can intimidate the little kids unintentionally at times so supervise playtime carefully.

These intelligent dogs is happy to move around and loves to please, so keep them busy, and they will happily snooze at your feet in the evenings.

Grooming and Maintenance

Your pet Saint Bernese will be a medium maintenance dog which will need regular grooming. These dogs are heavy shedders, so regular cleaning of the fur from the floor can be a routine job. A Saint Bernese is not a hypoallergenic dog breed.

They have thick and dense coat which requires a good strong bristle brushing daily will remove most stray hairs and prevent your dogs hair from matting.

They may be prone to eyes and ears allergies, so clean them regularly and visit the veterinarian once a while for check-ups. Your dog will not much of bathing. Bathe them when they are dirty with a mild dog shampoo which is gentle on their skin.

Apart from this regular grooming, like trimming their nails, brushing their teeth is advised to keep your dog clean, tidy and healthy.

Health Problems

Crossbreeds are usually more healthy than their parent breeds and have less health issues. But the St. Bernese tends to inherit many of its parent breeds’ health problems as well as may develop the typical problems that all giant dogs deal with.

The average life expectancy of the St. Berner is approximately 7-10 years, which is quite shorter than other giant breeds.

When adopting one of these dogs, try to get all the vet papers and health certifications from its breeder. You should also get the dog tested when they come of age for other tests. (Some health tests require the dog to be at least two years old.)

Some major health concerns may be:

Bloat

Cancer

Obesity

Allergies

Eye problems

Hip dysplasia

Thyroid issues

Joint complications

Von Willebrand’s Disease

To keep your dog healthy and up to date on its shots, an annual visit to the vet is required.

Training

The St. Bernese is an intelligent dog breed and are not difficult to train. They love to please their families and will respond well to training if you are patient and encouraging with them.

These gentle dogs are smart but can be a little stubborn at times. Keep the training sessions fun and short, so your dog doesn’t lose their focus and become bored.

Positive Reinforcement: Like all other dogs these pooches respond well to praise, encouragement and treat session.

Obedience Training: Try to teach them to obey commands from their young puppy days. This will help you to raise your dog as a well-rounded one.

Socialization: Early socialization for the puppy is necessary to make them comfortable with strangers, children and other pets.

Diet/Feeding

As a very large active dog which needs its fuel to function, the Saint Bernese requires about three and one-half cups of dry food per day, which calculates to a monthly cost of about $80-90.

Temperament

These large size dogs are quite intelligent, loving, affectionate and protective of their families. Hence they make great watch dogs. Their temperament greatly depends on their parent’s lineage.

With their Saint Bernard genes, they enjoy playing with everyone around and are good caregivers as well. However, they may act stubborn at times.

They are diligent, alert and obedient dogs, who love to please their families and follow commands. Though they make great family pets, and are good with children, adult supervision is advised with kids owing to the big size of these dogs.

With proper socialization from their pup days they will get along well with kids and dogs and other pets. They may drool a lot like the Saint Bernard if they have the loose jowls, but this is uncommon in this breed.

Care ~ Exercise

The Saint Shepherd is a large active dog. However with low activity and exercise they have a tendency to get overweight.

Take them out for walking, jogging, etc once a day for 60-90 minutes. This will keep their energies channelized and keep them mentally and physically stimulated.

Without proper exercise they may tend to get anxious and develop bad behavior and barking traits.

Some great activities for your pet include playing fetch, playing with other dogs at the dog park, hiking, swimming, and obedience and agility training.

Grooming

The Saint Shepherd is a heavy shedder and needs quite some maintenance. You will need brush him daily using a hard bristle brush, metal comb or pin brush several times a week to prevent his coat from matting.

Bathe them once a month with a mild dog shampoo to keep him clean and dirt free.

Trim their nails regularly and brush their teeth atleast three times a week to avoid bad breadth.

Health Problems

Being a relatively new breed of dogs, not much health issues have been reported. However crossbreeds are usually more healthy than their purebred parents. These dogs have an average lifespan of 10-14 years.

Like all other dogs, the Saint Shepherd is also prone to some diseases like;

Gastric dilation volvulus

Hip and elbow dysplasia

Dilated cardiomyopathy

Renal cystadenocarcinoma

Nodular dermatofibrosis.

Occasional tests and visits to the vet for regular checkup is recommended. Before buying your pooch, be sure you get it from a responsible breeder and check it health papers.

Training

The Saint Shepherd is an intelligent canine breed and is obedient and a fast learner. They are easy to train as they are eager to please their owners.

If your dog is a stubborn one, just be patient and consistent and they will eventually come around to your way of thinking.

Socialization: They require early socialization from their puppy days. This will make them outgoing and even-tempered. They will not shy away from kids and pets and will be a well-rounded dog.

Obedience Training: Training them from early days to follow basic commands like “come”, “go”, “stand”, “fetch” will make them your obedient and calm pooch.

Feeding/Diet

This large breed is an active dog and has a good appetite. It’s best to feed them nutritious food which formulated for large breed puppies considering their size, age and weight.

A giant breed such as the Saint Shepherd needs adequate calcium and other mineral content in their diet, which is not found in maintenance dog foods.

Split meals into several smaller meals throughout the day, to avoid over-eating. Encourage your dog to eat more slowly.

Feed your pooch with good quality dog food with a protein percentage from the upper 20% level to the lower 30% mark. Fat percentage in the food is suggested to be around 12% to 18%.

Interesting Trivia

They are playful but also very calm dogs.

They tend to bark when they are excited.

The Saint Shepherd is a great family dog who gets along well with children. They are fast learners.

Temperament & Behavior

The Shiffon dogs are very cheerful in nature and they have a charming personality to bring a smile at anyone’s face. He is an energetic, happy little doggie who often described as rambunctious and curious pet.

They are too possessive of their owners, territory and family members, and all things that ‘belong’ to them. As a result, they may be stubborn, irritable, and even aggressive at times. However early socialization at an early age will help the Brussels Shih Tzu mix learn exactly what behavior you expect from him.

They get along well with children and other pets if socialized from early puppyhood. Loyal and protective of their family, the <g class="gr_ gr_85 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="85" data-gr-id="85">Shiffons</g> make a great guard dog, perfectly adapted to live in apartments and small houses. They are not really quiet-natured and would guard their families and homes at night, while a single noise or stranger would make them yap and bark.

They love to be around people and families, and leaving them for long periods is not a great thing, as they may suffer from separation anxiety.

Care

Exercise

This dog breed is clever, intelligent, sensible, act obediently towards their trainers. This little pup is full of energy and will love to play with you and your loved ones all the time. Owing to their small size they do not require much exercise.

They love walking along with human companions and playing indoors is a part of their daily activities. A daily walk, jog session at the nearby park will be great for them. This will channelize their energies and keep them mentally fit too. They enjoy going on long trips. Lack of exercise can become destructive for them.

Grooming

The Shiffon will require a moderate amount of grooming. They have low to moderate shedding tendency depending on the coat he has. A longer coat too will need more bushing to keep it free of tangles. Regular checking and wiping his ears clean once a week and brush his teeth two to three times a week will keep him tidy and free from allergies. Bathe him only when necessary. Trim his nails every other week unless he wears his nails down on his own.

Health Issues

The Shiffon has the average lifespan of most small to medium dog breeds, which is 12 to 15 years. The Shiffon dogs are relatively healthy breed with only a few health risks to watch out for like Patellar luxation, Eye problems, Kidney and bladder problems, umbilical hernia, liver problems, allergies, ear infections, dental problems, Hip dysplasia, snuffles and reverse sneezing. It is always advisable to consult a vet and get a regular check-up for your pooch to keep away general health issues!

Training Tips

The <g class="gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="8" data-gr-id="8">Shiffon</g> is a moderately easy dog to train who is obedient and loyal to his owners. The hybrid dog may be stubborn at times, but it responds quite well to training and learning tricks readily. The Brussels Griffon Shih Tzu mix can easily be taught to perform a wide variety of tricks.

They are intelligent, sensitive and clever with obedience training. But remember, praise and encouragement is the key to success. If you treat them, you will only encourage them, as they enjoy acting like your attendant jester, always ready to entertain you. So, it would be wise if you will hold patience and be consistent in your training techniques.

Diet/Food

A Shiffon dog generally lives on a trimmed diet. Only one bowl of food is enough to keep them healthy, jolly and active. So it is recommended to feed with the best quality of food. Their diet should contain all the necessary proteins and vitamins that help them survive for long and remain healthy. Optimal nutrition provided to them can reduce the health problems in them to some extent.

Standard Sheepadoodles: – results from crossing a Standard Poodle with an Old English Sheepdog, will generally be 50 lbs. And up.

Sheepadoodles are like all other breeds and sometimes can vary from these weights as mature grow up adults.

Sheepadoodle Temperament

The Sheepadoodle personality will be influenced by the genetic makeup of the Poodle and the Old English Sheepdog.

Sheepdogs greatly enjoy being included in family time and along with the Poodle can do well with children provided that they are socialized and trained early.

Most Sheepadoodle owners describe their pups as obedient, fast learner, sociable, playful, people-oriented, and displaying a sweet disposition.

Sheepadoodle Care: Exercise, Grooming, Health Problems

Exercise

Sheepoodles just fine in any type of home and apartment so regular exercise is required. Exercise is also important to keep your dog healthy.

Doodle is a strong, active dog that requires a great deal of daily exercise. There are many physical, health benefits as well.

When Sheepdogpoo receives regular exercise, it helps to prevent Heart disease, stroke, arthritis etc.

Grooming

The Sheepadoodle is a low shedding breed but needs regular brushing to maintain a long wavy and soft. coat/

Sheepadoodles can have their furry coats both straight or curly, which requires regular brushing a few times weekly. Trimming them when necessary, especially if that covers their eyes, is advisable.

Clean their ears at times to avoid infections. Regular and complete grooming is good for your dog health.

Health Problems

A cross-breed dog is typically free from the health issues parent breeds can experience however you need to know what your pet could potentially inherit.

With the Sheepadoodle, he can be prone to joint issues, hip dysplasia, ear infection, bloat, etc. Cushing’s or Addisons disease as well as skin issues and certain cancers.

Training Needs of Sheepadoodles

They are easy to train, but just like most other dogs, the training process must be accompanied by socialization and these both need to start when the puppy is very young.

The Sheepadoodle is a highly intelligent and obedient dog breed, that quickly obeys commands and is eager to please.

As a result, training will come fairly easily. Because he can be a bit brusque with other dogs, his socialization and obedience training should begin at an early age.

Feeding & Diet

The Sheepadoodle is a large breed dog and will require a top quality kibble that meets his age, size and activity levels.

Food should avoid fillers that will encourage him to keep eating to feel full and exercise should be avoided right after meals because of the potential of bloat.

Because he has a strong tendency to become obese as well as experience a digestive issue known as bloat, your dog will need to be fed 2 to 3 small meals throughout the day rather than free fed.

Sheepadoodle Puppies

Sheepadoodle puppies are bright and typically well-behaved – which makes them great for training while they’re young.

They love to play from puppyhood to adulthood and investing in some squeaky chew or puzzle toys will be sure to keep him occupied for hours when crated.

Appearance of Shichons

Shichons are often called fluffy little “teddy bears” due to their beyond cute appearance. They are small sized dogs with long, fluffy coats that are often wavy or curly.

The coats are often white like the Bichon Frise but can be almost any color or combination of colors due to the Shih-Tzu genes. They have sweet, round button eyes that can be golden, hazel and different shades of brown.

Shichons (Zuchons) are often white like the Bichon but may be various other colors and combinations of colors. White, black, tan, apricot, red, grey, silver, cream, and chocolate are several colors that can be inherited from the Shih-Tzu lineage or a combination color like black and white and more.

Mixes and Variants

Temperament & Behavior of Shichons

With a lively and spunky personality, Zuchons are known to be well-mannered, affectionate, loving and are great with children of all ages and other pets. The temperament of the Shichon is usually described as happy-go-lucky; they are calm yet playful as well as cuddly and lovable.

Playing and hogging attention is high on their list of priorities, so make sure your dog gets plenty of both and they don’t like to be left alone for longer periods. But this breed isn’t all about just fun and games – he will also serve as a watchdog, letting you know when someone is at the door.

Care ~ Exercise, Grooming, Health Issues

Exercise: These Bichon Frise Shih Tzu crosses have plenty of playful energy and they usually prefer to do whatever you are doing and do not have stringent exercise requirements. They are known to enjoy playing with toys and, ideally, owners will have time to give them a bit of daily outdoor playtime. A few walks or outdoor trips daily to the park is recommended.

Grooming: The easy-to-groom Shichon need regular care including hair-combing with soft-bristle brushes, as also trimming the coat once bimonthly for cleanliness and to avoid hair from getting entangled. Bath them very rarely, when actually necessary for hygiene and remove any foul odor. Regular care, timely brush their teeth and check for ear redness and infections.

Health Problems: This dog breed is generally healthy, free from many of the health issues that can affect purebred dogs The average life expectancy of a Zuchon is around 12–15 years. Some possible defects known to designer dogs include canine hip dysplasia, deafness, epilepsy, and liver disease. Routine visits to your veterinarian can also help monitor for and even prevent certain health conditions.

Training Requirements

Intelligent and eager to please, the Shichons are easy to train because he is so easy going. Use positive training techniques and be consistent with training lessons – you’ll see the best results when employing these methods.

Stay away from physical or other harsh training methods, as they won’t work. Offer treats and praise for a job well done. This helps your dog stay interested while training.

Feeding/Diet

Be sure to feed your Zuchon high quality, dry kibble, specifically designed for small and active dogs. You can also bake them a turkey meatloaf mixed with parsley, oats, apples, and eggs.

Avoid wet and canned foods, as this could lead to tooth decay, tooth loss, gum disease, and bad breath.

Shichon Puppies

It’s hard to resist a Zuchon puppy. They are so small and furry, it’ll be easy to let them get away with anything. But it’s important to remember that training starts as soon as you bring a puppy home. You’ll need to train and socialize your Zuchon puppy right from the beginning, and keep at it as he grows older.

What is a Schnoodle?

The “Schnoodle Doodle” (a common term for the Poodle mix) is a Schnauzer Poodle mix. They are developed by crossing the smaller breeds of the Poodle and Schnauzer and make the perfect lap, companion and therapy dogs.

Origin/History of Schnoodle Dogs

The origin of these dogs in actuality as documented began in 1980 in the United States of America by crossing the Poodle and Schnauzer, with the first purposeful crossbreeding done in Minnesota.

The goal was to achieve the perfect dog for people who want companion breeds and who suffer from allergies to dog dander, as well as those who prefer not to have dog hair coating their clothing and home.

Though it has not gained sufficient popularity in comparison to the other designer breeds, Schnoodle puppies are being highly sought after at present.

Editor’s Recommendation: Sheepadoodle Dog Breeds

At present breeders have also begun creating multigenerational Schnoodle where one dog of this breed is bred with the other.

Expected Sizes of Adult Schnoodle Dogs

Due to the wide range of sizes in a Schnoodle’s parent breeds, a Schnoodle (full grown) may be small, medium, or large in size. The different Schnoodle varieties are listed below with their expected grown-up sizes.

A Toy Schnoodle (a Toy Poodle crossed with a Miniature Schnauzer) may reach 10-14 inches tall and 4-10 pounds.

A Miniature Schnoodle (a Miniature Schnauzer crossed with a Miniature Poodle) might reach 14 or 15 inches tall and 10-20 pounds.

A Standard Schnoodle (a Standard Poodle crossed with a Standard Schnauzer) could reach 15-19.5 inches tall and 35-60 pounds.

A Giant Schnauzer Poodle (a Standard Poodle crossed with a Giant Schnauzer) 15-27.5 inches tall and 40-85 pounds.

The largest of this variety is the Giant Schnoodle which is developed by crossing the Giant Schnauzer and the Standard Poodle. You might even spot a tiny teacup variety inheriting the genes of the teacup Poodle.

Personality & Temperament of Schnauzerdoodle Dogs

The temperament of the Schnoodle reflects its Schnauzer and Poodle forebears. Regardless of their generation, every Schnoodle will have their own individual traits and characteristics.

The friendly, loving and easy-going disposition of the Schnoodles makes them ideal family dogs. They are alert and playful like the Schnauzer or intelligent, active and obedient as the Poodle.

Poodles also do not like being left out of activities with you or being crated for long periods. They are intelligent, working dogs who want to have something to do or play with, which is why many of them are amazing in the show pen!

Small-sized Schnoodles are well-suited to live in an apartment or urban dwellers, though the larger variations thrive well in large homes having a fenced yard.

Schnoodles form strong ties with their families and dogs are never very happy when they find themselves left on their own for longer periods of time. They suffer from separation anxiety and leaving them alone is not recommended as they may get destructive.

Care ~ Exercise, Grooming & Health Problems

Exercise

Schnoodles, of all sizes, is quite energetic and lively dogs and as such, they need the right amount of exercise every day combined with as much mental stimulation as possible to prevent them from getting bored. These dogs require socialization with other dogs, children, and adults to prevent possible territorial behavior.

They need anything from 40 to 60-minutes exercise or a walk a day with as much off the lead time as possible. If they are not given the right amount of mental stimulation and exercise every day, a Schnoodle would quickly get bored and could even begin to show some destructive behaviors, which is their way of relieving any stress they are feeling and not necessarily because they are being naughty.

Grooming

Grooming requirements depend on the type of coat that the Schnoodle inherits with the wiry Schnauzer-type coat generally requiring less maintenance than that of the Poodle parent.

As a general rule, most need at least twice-weekly brushing with occasional baths, perhaps on a monthly basis. The Schnoodle can look very smart when professionally groomed, and it is best to have this done approximately every two months.

Like any dog, it will sometimes need its nails clipped. This is generally easy to do with the proper equipment, and a Schnoodle that has become accustomed to regular, careful nail clips from puppyhood should be willing to let its owner do this without fuss.

Editor’s Recommendation: Aussiedoodle Dog Breeds

Tooth brushing is another good practice that should begin at a young age and should be done daily for maximum benefit.

Health Problems

The average life expectancy/span of a Schnoodle is between 10 and 15 years when properly cared for and fed timely and appropriate good quality diet to suit their ages and size.

Though a healthy and hardy breed, they might acquire the genetic health issues of both their parents. The conditions that seem to affect the breed the most include the following:

Hip Dysplasia

Elbow Dysplasia

Cataracts

Epilepsy

Progressive Retinal Atrophy

Training

Most Schnoodles are exceptionally intelligent dogs and easy to train. These intelligent dogs will be a trainer’s delight when dealt with in a proper way by a firm and skilled instructor.

Socialization and obedience training is to be imparted to the Schnoodle puppies from the beginning to help them develop a pleasing personality.

As they get bored, quite easily try keeping them motivated by positive reinforcement techniques so that they acquire an interest in the training procedure.

If you do not want to go through the tedious task of training your puppy, you may send them to a puppy kindergarten school.

Feedings/Diet

If you get a Schnoodle puppy from a breeder, they would give you a feeding schedule and it’s important to stick to the same routine, feeding the same puppy food to avoid any tummy upsets.

Schnoodles weighing up to 20 pounds can be given three-fourths to one cup of dry dog food of a higher quality daily. Miniature or Toy variants need a lesser amount of food, whereas the quantity for your Giant Schnoodle, should be greater.

Schnoodle Puppies need to be fed a highly nutritious, good quality diet for them to develop and grow as they should. As a rough guide, a Schnoodle puppy can be fed the following amounts every day making sure their meals are evenly spread out throughout the day and it’s best to feed them 3 or 4 times a day.

Dogs should never be exercised just before or just after they have eaten either because this puts them more at risk of suffering from gastric torsion.

Fun-Facts about Schnoodles

Some Schnoodles love being in the limelight, and they do well in such dog sports as agility, flyball, obedience, and rally, all of which are open to mixed breeds and crossbreeds.

American actresses Claire Danes and Dakota Fanning have a Schnoodle as their pet.

If you happen to make a list of the world’s most attractive breeds of dogs, then the Samoyed Dogs are sure to appear among the first five.

Usually, people love to keep this dog with them chiefly because of their extraordinary appearance. They are simply beautiful with their white fluffy fleece and extraordinary features like wedge-shaped head and a plumed tail. =

‘Also known for its agility and physical fitness, the dog is found to be perfect for the job of taking care of the cattle while taking them for a graze.

The farmers find these dogs as their best friend. With a strong muscular body, the Samoyed Dogs are known by some other names, like ‘Sammy’ and ‘Smiling Sami.’

History of Samoyed Dogs

Samoyed Dogs are an ancient breed of dogs. The experts say these dogs are originally from Siberia where the shepherds used their skills for managing their herd of cattle.

They were brought to England in the late 19th century. The Americans used this dog as the best gifts for the Czars of the USSR, former Soviet Republic.

The traces are found that tells Queen Alexandria had a special corner in her heart for this species of dog from Siberia. Apart from managing the herds of reindeer in their original place, the Samoyed Dogs are very friendly indeed, and they love to dwell with the families that own them.

Due to this special characteristic of theirs, these dos are often termed as Family Dogs.

Temperament & Personality ~ Shih Poo (Shih-Tzu and Poodle Mix)

Small, sturdy and zesty, Shih Tzu Poos are affectionate, fun-loving, and full of joy. They tend to make you smile with their charming clown-like antics. Their temperament is a combination of the Shih Tzu and poodle mix, but even the most successful breeders cannot predict the temperament and personality that will get emerged in the resulting crossbreed. Owing to their tiny size the Shih Poos are generally quiet, shy and obedient dogs by nature. However, they can bark louder their parent breed of Shih Tzu at times!

These little pooches know how to socialize with children and other pets of the house. They are loyal, loving and affectionate, and enjoy the attention of their owners and love spending time caressed, sitting on the laps of their family members. This makes them a great lap dog for families with kids and elderly people.

Care ~ Shih Poo (Shih-Tzu and Poodle Mix)

Exercise: Shihpoos are quite energetic and playful but they don’t require rigorous and long exercise schedules. Moderate and short brisk walks in the morning and evening will suffice this little furry friend. They enjoy and shed calories playing around your home with balls, toys and keeps happy. Playing in the open backyard or fenced grassy lawn without the leash will be appreciated by this playful dog breed.

Grooming: A Shih Pooh is a low shedding, a hypoallergenic dog which needs a regular brushing of its curly coat to keep off the tangles, debris, and dirt. This keeps them tidy and avoids their long hair to be matted. You can seek professional help in 3-4 months for this. Regular grooming like trimming the nails, checking and cleaning ears and wiping eyes with soft cloth regularly is recommended. Bathing is needed in about 2-3 weeks depending on dog’s activities.

Health Problems: The average life span of a Shih Poo is between 10-15 years. Proper care and quality diet should be fed to suit their health and age. Shihpoos may inherit health disorders of their parent breeds. The breed is susceptible to dental problems, hypothyroidism, patellar luxation, renal dysplasia, and lung disorders. It’s recommended to go for regular check-ups with the veteran to help you keep an update on your pet’s health condition.

Training

Shih Poos are smart and intelligent and they are easy to train. They may have a stubborn streak and thus they need a firm and authoritative master. However, they are sensitive and do not respond to harsh training techniques. So try and use positive methods for training and reward him with treats in his training sessions. Try socializing them from their puppy-days and train them to get used to strangers and be tolerant and adjustable of other pets and situations. Crate training is also easy with them since this dog loves to poop and pee in such places that are away from their sleeping place.

Shih Poo Puppies & Haircuts

Shih Poo Haircuts

Shih-Poo pups are as cute and cuddly as any tiny canine, but they can also be a handful, especially if they inherit the Shih Tzu’s affinity for blazing his own trail. Shih Poos usually have different types of hair varying from curly to straight depending on how the parent genes are scattered. Most are likely to have a wavy or curlier coat than a purebred Shih Tzu.

Diet/ Feeding ~ Shih Poo ( Shih-Tzu and Poodle Mix)

Shih-Poos are quite energetic and thus need a high-quality diet of dry dog food. Dry kibble is essential as this crossbreed tends to have dental problems, including premature tooth loss. Dry food can help to prevent this as well as caries, gum disease, and bad breath. This dog breed has the tendency to overeat at times, so be careful of the Shih-Poo’s caloric intake is important to his overall health development.

Interesting Facts ~ Shih Poo ( Shih-Tzu and Poodle Mix)

Despite their popularity, Shih Poos, like other hybrids, are not currently recognized by well-known kennel clubs, such as the American Kennel Club.

History of Scottish Deerhound

The origins of the Scottish Deerhound are lost to a time before recorded history. Deerhounds are closely related to the Greyhound and so in the past has also been called a Scotch Greyhound.

They were used as deer hunting dogs for Scottish tribes in the Middle Ages. Owing to their gentle nature and courage for hunting they became known as the “Royal Dog of Scotland” and no one ranking below earl was permitted to own one.

Due to its restricted ownership, the Scottish Deerhound became a rare breed after World War I.

This breed made its way to America in 1886 and today the Scottish Deerhound ranks 154th among the breeds registered by the American Kennel Club(AKC).

In Australia, the deerhounds are used to hunt kangaroo and wild boars, while in the United States they are used to retrieve games like coyotes, wolves as well as rabbits.

Temperament & Personality

The Scottish Deerhound is a gentle, polite and well-mannered dog. They are very loyal and devoted and so mix well with children too giving them a great company.

They are quiet, dignified and docile and very friendly in nature. They love to be around people and hence they do not get along well in homes where they are left on their own.

The deerhounds rarely bark so they do not make good watchdogs or guard dogs owing to their friendly nature with strangers.

Scottish Deerhound Puppy

As a puppy, the Scottish Deerhound is active and more mischievous and playful.

Early Socialization and exposure to different people, sounds, and sights at a young age ensure that your Deerhound Puppy grows up to be a well-rounded pooch.

The Deerhound is a fairly active dog and so needs regular exercise to remain fit and healthy.

Despite its calm and quiet nature, this breed is less suitable for apartment dwellers.

Regular walks to nearby parks for an hour or so every day keeps them playful and happy.

Care: Exercise, Grooming and Health Issues

Exercise

This is a very active breed that needs to be taken out on a daily basis. They enjoy long walks and runs, making an excellent jogging companion.

Always keep in mind that they have an instinct to chase so do not let them off the lead in an unsafe area.

Deerhound puppies need plenty of off-leash exercise in a safely fenced area to develop their bones and joints properly.

While it’s interesting and breathtaking to see a Deerhound in action, it’s heartbreaking to see him injured in the chase or hurt other animals he is chasing.

So proper care and a watch is a must!

Grooming

Scottish Deerhounds are average shedders. They have a thick coat which is on an average 3-4 inches long, harsh and wiry.

Regular brushing the coat of the Deerhound with wire slicker brush will be great to stimulate the circulation and removal of dead hair and skin from the coat.

This will enhance the distribution of the natural skin oils and the shine on its skin. Remember to brush in the direction the hair is growing. To give the final makeover use a metal comb — known as a greyhound comb — to get rid of the tangles.

Bathe your deerhound when it gets messy to remove all dirt, dust, and unwanted odor and tidy him up.

Other grooming needs include trimming the nails regularly, dental care, and cleaning eyes and ears with soft cotton balls.

Since deerhounds have floppy ears it’s important to clean them twice a week to avoid ear infections.

Health Problems

This enormous canine is a healthy and active dog breed, however, like all other dogs, they are prone to certain health issues.

Some of the common health problems faced by the Scottish Deerhound are:

Gastric Torsion or Bloating

Cardiomyopathy

Allergies

Osteosarcoma (bone cancer)

Hypothyroidism

Deerhounds can be dangerously sensitive to anesthesia and certain drugs. If you wish to own a Scottish Deerhound take the information from responsible breeders to know about specific health concerns within the breed.

As this is an exceptionally big dog, guardians need to consider the larger feed, medicine and boarding bills they entail.

Training

Though Deerhounds are gentle and docile indoors they are tough to train due to their lazy and laid-back attitude.

Training them will be moderately easy for experienced owners. They will gradually and slowly respond to the sessions at its own pace.

To make the training sessions interesting and playful you can try new techniques and tacts so that they don’t get bored easily.

Make sure you provide its basic obedience training early on, and should also start early socialization when you get it.

To keep them upbeat offer plenty of treats, rewards, and encouragement.

Feeding

What you feed your dog with is an individual choice, but working with your veterinarian/breeder, in the beginning, will be the best way to get an idea and determine the frequency of meals for a Deerhound Puppy or best adult diet to increase his longevity.

However, it’s recommended to feed this large breed with 3-4 cups of high-quality dry dog food daily divided into 2-3 meals.
