The Pom-Shi is a crossbred between the Pomeranian and the Shiba Inu. This mix is most commonly referred to as a “Shi Pom” – and sometimes “Pom Shi.”

Pomeranian X Shiba Inu = Pom Shi

This unique combination of the <g class="gr_ gr_21 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="21" data-gr-id="21">parents</g> breeds results in a canine mix that’s friendly, intelligent, and lively- a great companion for active singles or families.

Appearance

A Shi Pom is a small doggy that has a maximum weight between 12 -14 lbs and a height of 9 – 15 inches. They have small feet, dark almond eyes, a small narrow muzzle with a black nose. The Shiba Inu Pomeranian Mix is quite agile, her gait very cat-like and regal in movement with her short fluffy tail curling over her back.

The Shi-Pom’s coat is thick and cottony. However, that will shed and reveal a soft, thick coat that is very plush, with a more rough line of fur down the spine. The most common color of Shi Pom coats is tan, white, black, or a combination of these.

Temperament & Behavior

Pom-Shi is a mix of the Pomeranian and the Shiba Inu and can inherit the temperament qualities of either or both parent breeds. These designer dogs have a wonderful personality and bring an unusual combination of traits that you’re bound to love.

Pom-Shi dogs are sweet, playful, energetic, lively, affectionate, and loves cuddling with their owners/rescuers. She gets intelligence and independence from both sides of the bio mix and, while this makes her a great family dog, and at times they can be moderately difficult to train.

However, the Shi-Pom can be a yappy little dog that tends to bark at intruders or sometimes guests. They like to bark at anything unusual. These traits make them good <g class="gr_ gr_182 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del" id="182" data-gr-id="182">watch dogs</g> or guard dogs for the family.

These dogs have moderate energy levels which will need to be managed to keep her healthy, fit and happy. You should still make sure to properly socialize them from an early age and promote self-sufficiency to avoid any behavioral issues down the road.

Care ~ Exercise

Your Pom-Shi hybrid is a lively little pooch with a moderate amount of energy. She will love going for daily walks, daily romps, and playtime in the dog park or in the fenced in back yard.

Playing interactive games of fetch, Frisbee and hide and seek with her toys inside or outside the house will keep them from boredom. On average, 30 to 45 minutes of daily exercise will keep your pet healthy and happy.

However, you should never let the Pom and Shiba Inu mix off leash when in a park or an outdoor adventure! Their inquisitive nature and desire for exploration can quickly lead them to trouble, so make sure they are leashed when outdoors.

Grooming

The Pom Shi is a moderate maintenance dog. It is low shedding breed and brushing it once a week will suffice to remove the dirt, mats, and loose hair on its coat.

The frequency of brushing will depend on the length of its hair which is determined by the genetics of the parents having the greatest influence in this mix breed.

Regular ears check-up is recommended and clean them as needed with a cotton ball and an approved canine ear cleaner. Be sure to check and trim her toenails weekly. Brushing their teeth 2-3 times a week is also advised.

Health Problems

In general, the Pom Shi dogs are quite healthy and are not affected by many hereditary issues. They have a life span of 12-15 years.

However, some potential health concerns may be:

Patellar Luxation

Hip Dysplasia

Mono/Bilateral Cryptorchidism

Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)

There may also be occasional diagnoses for Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Sebaceous Adenitis, hypothyroidism, and cataracts.

Regular visit to your veteran for check-ups and occasional tests for the pooch is advised, to keep him healthy.

Training

Pom Shi has a very strong personality and a dominant pack leader is needed to train him and put in its place. Early socialization is very important to raise a Pom Shi pup with the even tempered behavior and impeccable manners.

By using treats and praise to motivate your dog, instead of relying on harsher discipline methods, you can make sure that they find your instructions more appealing. Keep his training sessions short and fun because this will reduce the chances of boredom.

Food/Diet

Pom Shi is a small sized pooch and feeding him with high-quality dry dog food is the best option. A meal rich in <g class="gr_ gr_196 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep" id="196" data-gr-id="196">protein,</g> should suffice your dog’s caloric needs. If you’ll go with commercial food, make sure it has barley, oatmeal, or rice.

Make sure to take into account your pet’s size and activity level, as many companies produce food that’s tailored to your pet’s unique needs.

Additionally, you could feed your Pom-Shi a homecooked or raw food diet, vegetables, fruits and more but make sure to consult a veterinarian before you make the switch.

Follow the serving sizes appropriate for your dog’s age and size, and don’t go overboard with treats as these dogs are prone to gain weight quickly.

Interesting Fact

Some Pom Shi breeders often promote them as ‘calmer’ Pomeranians or ‘friendlier’ Shiba Inus. They also try to market them as mini Shiba Inus, which is very misleading.

Temperament and Behavior

The personality and character of this pug mix is a combination of both parent’s temperament. Hugs are known to be a happy pet who is adorable, intelligent, friendly, outgoing, and charming.

Inheriting the pug-like traits and friendliness, these dogs are highly affectionate to their family members. At times some Hugs can be lazy sitting in its bed, sleeping or dozing which can cause obesity.

They are very friendly with kids and other pets. A Hug is also likely to be a loyal companion and is an extremely alert breed, making great watchdogs.

Some hug dogs might not feel very comfortable living in small living spaces, a trait inherited from their Siberian Husky parents, especially if it is large in size.

Care ~ Exercise

Siberian Huskies are high energy dogs and the Pug tends to have a low energy level. Thus the Hugs may have a moderate to high energy level. Owing to their high level of energy, these active dogs are classified as working dogs who need a significant amount of exercise daily.

You May Also Like: “Dorkie Dog Breed Information“

Take your pet out for a leashed walk every day for an hour or so. Setting out for a long jogging with your dog would also be a good idea. Families with open yards or large secure gardens work great for Hugs who have high energy levels.

Grooming & Maintanence

The Hug may have a medium to long coat depending on his genes. He should be brushed or combed out weekly to remove dead hair and to keep his fur shiny. If your Hug has thick, long hair it may need to be brushed out several times a week to prevent matting.

Flopped, dropped ears need to be cleaned weekly.

His nails should be trimmed regularly, overgrown nails can cause pain.

His teeth should be brushed weekly to prevent bad breath and tartar build-up.

If your pooch has folds on his face they should be wiped daily, taking care to dry them thoroughly to keep them clean.

The Hug should only be bathed when they are dirty or every few months.

Health Problems

The expected life span for a Hug is approximately 12 to 15 years. A Pugsky is usually a healthy dog breed, with no particular health issues.

Some concerns owing to their parental lineage may be:

Entropion

Cataracts

Hip Dysplasia

Hypothyroidism

Mast Cell Tumors

Training

Proper training is just as crucial as regular exercise for the Husky Pug Mix. You may need some patience when it comes to training Hug puppies, as many of these hybrids inherited the willfulness of the Siberian Husky.

Positive reinforcement goes a long way in getting the Hugs to behave. It also helps to train your puppy as early as possible and rewarding them for good behavior.

Some Hug dogs have couch-potato tendencies owing to their Pug genetics. You can get rid of this laziness by using treats, toys, and games to get your dog moving.

Diet/Feeding

Highly nutritious dog foods are recommended for this active canine breed. But the diet schedules must be set keeping in mind our dog’s size. Controlling your Hug’s diet is important if he takes after his Pug parent and can’t tolerate heavy exercise as they are prone to obesity.

Lab Pei is a medium to large breed dog that’s a cross of the Labrador Retriever and the Chinese Shar-Pei. He is an independent and loyal companion.

History/Origin

It is believed that the hybrid may have originated around the 2000s, likely in North America. Although Lab Pei is a relatively new breed of designer dog, his lineage dates back centuries.

As a hybrid, the Lab Pei does not qualify to be a member of the elite American Kennel Club’s (AKC). His parents, however, have both achieved AKC status; the Labrador retriever was admitted to the club’s “sporting” group back in 1917 and the Shar-Pei became a member of the “non-sporting” group as recently as 1992.

Appearance

A Chinese Shar-Pei Lab mix is a medium-sized dog with a strongly built structure. Their face resembles very much like their lab parent and they weigh between 55-70 pounds and standing 18-25 inches in height.

Lab Pei has a short coat that may be dense and water resistant, a trait they inherit from their Labrador lineage.

These hybrids are not as wrinkled like their parent breed the Shar-Pei, but they will tend to have loose facial skin around their forehead.

The Lab-Pei have small almond-shaped eyes and their ears are set high on the head and are semi-flopped down, with a pointed tip.

They have a wide and broad head, while their muzzle tends to be medium in length, their noses are black to dark brown and their tails are set high and are semi-curved.

Temperament and Behavior

These dogs generally have an even, protective, and loving nature which they inherit from their parents.

It has a very loyal and protective nature, making it a terrific watch and guard dog.

The Shar-Pei and Labs have very different temperaments. While the Lab is friendly and outgoing pooch, the Shar-Pei can be more reserved, thus the resultant Lab-Pei can be difficult to predict at times.

Their Labrador Retriever and Chinese Shar-Pei lineage make an intelligent and affectionate dog that is highly trainable and keen to please its humans.

Exercise

Adequate exercise and physical activities are recommended for this average large sized Lab Pei breed. Since both the parent breed the Labrador retriever and the Shar-Pei are on the heavier side, it’s important that the Shar-Pei Lab Mix has a regular exercise routine in order to help him stay fit and healthy.

He has a high instinct to play and run around so a fenced yard or off-leash spacious zone where he can run and interact with other dogs is ideal.

An ideal balance between their physical and mental health should be maintained, and prevent them from being flippant, bored and destructive.

Grooming

The Lab Pei is an average to low maintenance canine breed as they don’t require extensive grooming.

They have a short coat, which makes brushing twice a week adequate to remove the loose fur and debris and shall maintain the natural glow.

This dog isn’t a big fan of water at all, so bathing is a rare thing. However, when untidy or you may bathe him maybe once 6-8 months for proper hygiene.

If your pet has some wrinkles and folds on their skin, it is essential that these folds be cleaned on a regular basis and wiped properly in order to prevent bacteria and yeast buildup.

Ears should be cleaned and checked on a regular basis for signs of infection and nails trimming and teeth brushing as done to other similar pet dogs.

Health Problems

Hybrid dogs won’t necessarily experience the same health issues as his parents. Many genetic disorders bypass the hybrid entirely. However, both general and genetic issues can’t be ignored.

Lab Pei Dogs may be prone to Dysplasia, luxation, cherry eye, ear infections, stenotic nares, tight lips, malocclusion, hypothyroidism, demodectic mange, oleosa, hot spots, skin odor, etc. can’t also be ruled out.

This breed may suffer from entropion (wrinkles causing eyelids to fold in) from the Shar Pei side.

Training

Give them socialization and housebreaking training from the time you bring them home from the breeders.

Train the puppies consistently and with firm hands. Praise your dog or give them treats whenever it finds success or displays obedience.

Feeding/Diet

Your dog is quite an active and energetic one, who requires a healthy diet that would provide it with an optimal nutrition.

The Lab Pei should eat 2 to 4 cups( depending on the size) of good quality dry food like kibbles every day.

Meals should be small but frequent instead of one large meal once a day to prevent bloating.

The Lab Pei dogs have a tendency to overeat and hence become obese. This gives rise to a high risk of developing hip dysplasia and joint problems is a recipe for disaster.

Thus they should be fed with a controlled diet with the right amount of calories and nutrition to prevent them from being over-weight.

Shar Pei Lab Mix Puppies

Your Lab Pei puppy will need to be put on a diet specific for large breed dog puppies to help maintain a slower growth rate.

Feed him over several meal periods and ensure he has plenty of toys to keep him mentally stimulated and out of trouble.

Typically 1 cup per 6 pounds of body weight should be sufficient for growth of 2-3 pounds per week. Make sure to feed them in moderation so that they don’t overeat.

Too much exercise may tire him out but can also result in joint injuries that may plague him the rest of his life.

While both breed parents originated in China, it is believed that the mixed breed “Chow Pei”, originated in the United States but the approximate date of origin remains unknown.

History of Shar-Pei Chow Cross Breed

The exact date and place of origin of the Chow Peis is not known but is believed to have occurred in the United States.

The Chow Chow has great hunting skills and the Shar-Pei has superior guard dog skills, this mix has produced a canine which fulfills that original purpose extremely well.

The personality traits of both parent breeds are blended, resulting in a dog which is alert, protective, loving and intelligent.

The Chow Pei hybrid itself is recognized by the Designer Breed Registry and the International Designer Canine Registry.

They are further characterized by a Shar Pei-like hippo-shaped head and erect ears as the Chow Chow.

Personality & Temperament

These dogs are renowned for their loyalty and can have a bit of an aggressive and temperamental behavior due to their wild origins.

However, with the proper training, this can be controlled. Keeping him on a leash when outside is in everyone’s best interests.

Their personality is very affectionate, and they don’t like to be away from their owners.

The Chow Pei dogs are not naturally good with kids or strangers. You will need to begin socializing them with children and strangers as early as possible in his life to make them friendly and adaptable.

Inheriting the alertness of the Chow Chow and Shar Pei, this mix is wary about strangers that thereby making it a good watch and guard dog, that can go to any extent to protect its family.

Care & Maintenance

Exercise

Chow Pei is a fairly active canine breed and will require regular daily walks to keep him healthy and happy.

He can survive in an apartment but it is then incumbent upon the owner to assure he gets adequate exercise, both physical and mental, opportunities to channelize his energy. He does best when he has a fenced yard in which to roam and run.

Daily walks, frisbee, games of fetch, and obedience training will keep him well exercised and entertained.

Grooming

Chow Pei require moderate levels of maintenance.

Most often the coat is soft and thick and may be either long or short and, as such, will require brushing several times a week to remove loose hair and debris to keep it clean and healthy.

You should bathe him once a month or shampoo to reduce the “doggy” smell which can accompany your pooch.

This weekly brushing requirement will likely increase during the seasonal times of increased shedding which is in spring and even in summers.

Regular cleaning and clipping of toenails, teeth, ears, and eye check-up will keep your pet clean, healthy and happy.

Health Problems of Shar-Pei Chow Mix

The life expectancy of the Chow Pei is 10 to 15 years depending on how healthy they can remain.

This breed might inherit some of the health concerns of both its parent breeds. Some of the major health concerns of Chow Chow includes

Patellar Luxation

Skin Problems

Bloating

Eye Problems

Hypothyroidism

Cancer

Training

Training the Chow Pei might be challenging enough because of its independent and dominant nature, very much like its parents.

Firmness, patience, and assertion are the key requirements its trainer should possess to help it develop a pleasing personality.

Early socialization training is a must for Chow-Pei puppies which can be started by making them acquainted with various kinds of people and also teaching them to distinguish a positive experience from a negative one.

If a visitor is regular to your house, introduce him to your Chow Pei puppy slowly and gradually, probably by asking him to hold treats in his hand and give it each time the dog comes up to him.

Obedience training would help in controlling their independent behavior. While teaching them to follow commands like “Sit”, “Stop” or “Come”, make sure you have an assertive tone.

If your pup has already learned to respond to a clicker training device, then click on to it the moment he achieves a task and rewards him to motivate him.

Diet and Feeding

The Chow Pei will need around 2-3 cups of food a daily basis. If they are on the larger side and weight closer to 75 or 80 pounds, then this can be increased to 4 cups a day.

This should include an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals in his diet to ensure your pet gets proper and balanced nutrition.

It’s okay to feed them occasional treats and snacks but don’t let them eat too much.

Their short legs weren’t meant to handle the extra weight, and obesity can affect these dogs quite negatively.

Temperament and Behavior of Golden Pyrenees

The Golden Pyrenees takes a lot of its personality from the Golden Retriever, a breed that is known for its gentle, loving nature.

They love to play with adults, children, other dogs or even cats. Overall, they make excellent playmates because they retain their playful, gentle demeanor like most pups do and make excellent family dogs.

They are prone to take naps during the daytime but are alert and protective by disposition. While this breed of dog is active and loving, they can also show destructive behavior traits if not given the attention they want.

Owing to the dog’s huge size they are not suitable for apartment-style life as they require space to burn out their energy. For the same reason, they are also not a good choice for seniors who have limited mobility.

Care ~ Exercise, Grooming, Health Issues

Exercise: They need daily exercise to keep fit and healthy. It will also help to keep them within a healthy weight range, as they can easily put on excess weight.

Walking an hour or two daily, coupled with some indoor playtime, should be sufficient to burn out this giant breed’s energy.

A romp with other dogs in the secure dog park will assist with socializing your dog and he will learn to accept other dogs and people with good grace.

They do not tolerate extreme heat well with their thick coat so exercise in the coolest part of the day is best.

Allowing them to play and run around in an open (but safe) space would help relieve their energy.

Grooming: The Golden Pyr has a very thick and soft coat, which requires extra grooming to keep it from matting and tangling. It requires daily brushing to keep it soft and silky.

They don’t require regular bathing, only when it really needs it or it may lose the natural oils from the coat.

Other maintenance issues to address are trimming of the nails, and brushing the teeth to maintain good oral hygiene.

The Golden Pyrenees will love all the attention and will obligingly let you groom them to perfection.

Health Problems: For the Golden Pyrenees, the average lifespan is 10 to 13 years. Being a cross-bred designer dog means there is a chance of inheriting some health problems from either the Golden Retriever line or Great Pyrenees.

Major health concerns can be

Patellar Luxation

Hip Dysplasia

Von Willebrand’s Disease.

They may be prone to Congenital Eye Defects or bloating.

Training Requirements

They make great watchdogs and are protective of their family, but they need to be trained by a firm, calm owner, as they are extremely independent pooches.

They are a good combination of intelligence and alertness so training them should be easy. They’re kind and eager to please and they respond well to positive incentives.

Golden Pyrenees Puppies

The Golden Pyrenees puppies are gentle and playful even but as with any pup, they should not be left alone with children.

At three months of age, these little guys would have grown to about 18 inches in height, so they grow relatively quickly!

Feed/Diet Requirements

This breed of dog is known as a “giant,” which also means they have a giant appetite. Four to five cups of daily dry kibble are best in order to keep this big dog’s health and teeth in good shape.

Feed them with high-quality dog food keeping a balance of the nutrients and vitamins!
