Alaskan Shepherd is a crossbreed between the Alaskan Malamute and the German Shepherd. Owing to its large parents, the Alaskan Shepherd is also a big sized dog which is well suited for families owing to their amicable and loving nature.

Alaskan Malamute x German Shepherd = Alaskan Shepherd

History

The Alaskan Shepherd is a rare designer breed which may have been bred since the early 1900s in the United States. There is very little information is available regarding its origin. This dog was originally bred with an idea to develop a strong sled dog which may pull and carry heavy freight similar to the Alaskan Malamute. This scarce hybrid is not recognized by the AKC. However, in the year 2009, they gained recognition from the International Designer Canine Association (IDCA).

Appearance

These large-sized dogs inherit physical characteristics similar to their parents. They have an athletic built and are well-muscled and strong. They have a wolf-like appearance similar to its parent Alaskan Malamute. The average height of these dogs varies from 21 to 28 inches with an average weight of 60 to 125 pounds.

Alaskan Shepherds have attractive almond-shaped eyes, which may vary from blue, hazel or brown color and large erect and pointed ears. They have a very dense upper coat and it is thick, straight, and medium in length. The color of their coat may vary from gray, black, white, fawn, brown or a combination of any two.

Temperament and Personality

This German Shepherd-Alaskan Malamute mix is friendly, loyal and smart dogs. This alert breed is highly protective towards its family, owing to their attachment with their family, forming ideal watchdogs, a quality that they may have inherited from the German Shepherd.

They love the attention of the family, and may feel anxious or become destructive when bored or left alone for long hours. These dogs are good company for children and other pets. However, owing to their huge size, an adult should always supervise when your pet is around small children.

These dogs are highly protective for the family members and get alert when strangers are around. Thus making a great watchdog who keeps a close vigilance on any suspicious activity. Owing to their half german shepherd half malamute lineage they prefer cooler climates.

Care – Exercise

Both the parent breeds of the Alaskan Shepherd are working breeds and are highly energetic and active. Thus the resultant offsprings are also energetic and high endurance pets who need regular exercise to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.

These dogs love being outdoors in the yard or park and participate in activities like hiking, running, fetching in open spaces. A 60-90 minutes of walk, jog, or run will be ideal to keep them busy, as they may tend to get destructive when bored.

Grooming

They have medium length hair and extremely rough and dense double coats that shed heavily, especially during seasonal changes. Brushing them weekly with a bristled brush as well as using a de-shedder can help reduce seasonal shedding and keep the coat neat and polished.

Cleaning their ears and eyes regularly will help to keep allergies and infections at bay. Brushing their teeth weekly is recommended for good dental health along with clipping their nails. These dogs need only occasional baths when their coats are dirty with debris.

Health Problems

Alaskan Shepherd is usually a healthy breed with a lifespan of 11-13 years. They can have some of the health issues like chondrodysplasia, i.e., other body parts not functioning correctly. Also, they may get infected by cartilaginous exostosis that is a disorder of the bone because of the excessive formation of calcium.

Training

Start training your Alaskan Shepherd the moment you bring it into your home because puppies are the easiest to train.

Positive Reinforcement: Taking a positive and fun, rewards-based approach is the best way to encourage your pet.

Obedience Training: Obedience training always comes prior to socialization training, especially to herding dogs. Since herding dogs have a natural instinct to hunt other animals, it is important to train them the basic obedience commands like ‘freeze’, ‘back’, ‘halt’. ‘stop’, and etc. to keep them even-tempered and well-rounded dogs.

Socialization: Taking your young puppies to parks to play and meet other people and animals will make them comfortable with strangers and help them come out of their shyness.

Feeding

The Alaskan Shepherd is a large-sized active dog which needs healthy dog food which is divided into 2-3 meals. Be careful not to overfeed your dog with treats and meals as this may lead to obesity.

Temperament

These incredibly loyal dogs will take no time to be your favourite. They have a lovable personality and are known for their, mild, calm, trustworthy nature. They are very affectionate to the family members, kids and other pets and thus make ideal family and companion dogs.

The Saint Berner is not an aggressive dog although their massive size may be enough to deter any prowlers. Quiet, thoughtful, yet kind of goofy at times – this gentle dog relishes time with the family and will be a loyal and devoted companion.

However, these dogs may be stubborn at times and have temperamental issues. Try to deal with the stubbornness with patience and positive enforcement techniques. These dogs have a habit of drooling.

The Saint Bernese is not an apt choice for apartment style living owing to their huge size. A house with a backyard will suit their temperament. These dogs are adaptable to most climates except the extreme heat because of their dense double coat.

Care ~ Exercise

The Saint Bernese is a highly active breed which needs at least an hour of physical activity and exercise per day to keep him mentally and physically stimulated.

Daily walks, jogging and running around the park will be great for your pet and will help him socialize with people and other dogs as well. This will keep his energies channelized and help them to be even-tempered and not develop restlessness or temperamental issues.

These dogs are a a perfect choice active families and love to enjoy games and playtime with children although their size can intimidate the little kids unintentionally at times so supervise playtime carefully.

These intelligent dogs is happy to move around and loves to please, so keep them busy, and they will happily snooze at your feet in the evenings.

Grooming and Maintenance

Your pet Saint Bernese will be a medium maintenance dog which will need regular grooming. These dogs are heavy shedders, so regular cleaning of the fur from the floor can be a routine job. A Saint Bernese is not a hypoallergenic dog breed.

They have thick and dense coat which requires a good strong bristle brushing daily will remove most stray hairs and prevent your dogs hair from matting.

They may be prone to eyes and ears allergies, so clean them regularly and visit the veterinarian once a while for check-ups. Your dog will not much of bathing. Bathe them when they are dirty with a mild dog shampoo which is gentle on their skin.

Apart from this regular grooming, like trimming their nails, brushing their teeth is advised to keep your dog clean, tidy and healthy.

Health Problems

Crossbreeds are usually more healthy than their parent breeds and have less health issues. But the St. Bernese tends to inherit many of its parent breeds’ health problems as well as may develop the typical problems that all giant dogs deal with.

The average life expectancy of the St. Berner is approximately 7-10 years, which is quite shorter than other giant breeds.

When adopting one of these dogs, try to get all the vet papers and health certifications from its breeder. You should also get the dog tested when they come of age for other tests. (Some health tests require the dog to be at least two years old.)

Some major health concerns may be:

Bloat

Cancer

Obesity

Allergies

Eye problems

Hip dysplasia

Thyroid issues

Joint complications

Von Willebrand’s Disease

To keep your dog healthy and up to date on its shots, an annual visit to the vet is required.

Training

The St. Bernese is an intelligent dog breed and are not difficult to train. They love to please their families and will respond well to training if you are patient and encouraging with them.

These gentle dogs are smart but can be a little stubborn at times. Keep the training sessions fun and short, so your dog doesn’t lose their focus and become bored.

Positive Reinforcement: Like all other dogs these pooches respond well to praise, encouragement and treat session.

Obedience Training: Try to teach them to obey commands from their young puppy days. This will help you to raise your dog as a well-rounded one.

Socialization: Early socialization for the puppy is necessary to make them comfortable with strangers, children and other pets.

Diet/Feeding

As a very large active dog which needs its fuel to function, the Saint Bernese requires about three and one-half cups of dry food per day, which calculates to a monthly cost of about $80-90.

Temperament

These large size dogs are quite intelligent, loving, affectionate and protective of their families. Hence they make great watch dogs. Their temperament greatly depends on their parent’s lineage.

With their Saint Bernard genes, they enjoy playing with everyone around and are good caregivers as well. However, they may act stubborn at times.

They are diligent, alert and obedient dogs, who love to please their families and follow commands. Though they make great family pets, and are good with children, adult supervision is advised with kids owing to the big size of these dogs.

With proper socialization from their pup days they will get along well with kids and dogs and other pets. They may drool a lot like the Saint Bernard if they have the loose jowls, but this is uncommon in this breed.

Care ~ Exercise

The Saint Shepherd is a large active dog. However with low activity and exercise they have a tendency to get overweight.

Take them out for walking, jogging, etc once a day for 60-90 minutes. This will keep their energies channelized and keep them mentally and physically stimulated.

Without proper exercise they may tend to get anxious and develop bad behavior and barking traits.

Some great activities for your pet include playing fetch, playing with other dogs at the dog park, hiking, swimming, and obedience and agility training.

Grooming

The Saint Shepherd is a heavy shedder and needs quite some maintenance. You will need brush him daily using a hard bristle brush, metal comb or pin brush several times a week to prevent his coat from matting.

Bathe them once a month with a mild dog shampoo to keep him clean and dirt free.

Trim their nails regularly and brush their teeth atleast three times a week to avoid bad breadth.

Health Problems

Being a relatively new breed of dogs, not much health issues have been reported. However crossbreeds are usually more healthy than their purebred parents. These dogs have an average lifespan of 10-14 years.

Like all other dogs, the Saint Shepherd is also prone to some diseases like;

Gastric dilation volvulus

Hip and elbow dysplasia

Dilated cardiomyopathy

Renal cystadenocarcinoma

Nodular dermatofibrosis.

Occasional tests and visits to the vet for regular checkup is recommended. Before buying your pooch, be sure you get it from a responsible breeder and check it health papers.

Training

The Saint Shepherd is an intelligent canine breed and is obedient and a fast learner. They are easy to train as they are eager to please their owners.

If your dog is a stubborn one, just be patient and consistent and they will eventually come around to your way of thinking.

Socialization: They require early socialization from their puppy days. This will make them outgoing and even-tempered. They will not shy away from kids and pets and will be a well-rounded dog.

Obedience Training: Training them from early days to follow basic commands like “come”, “go”, “stand”, “fetch” will make them your obedient and calm pooch.

Feeding/Diet

This large breed is an active dog and has a good appetite. It’s best to feed them nutritious food which formulated for large breed puppies considering their size, age and weight.

A giant breed such as the Saint Shepherd needs adequate calcium and other mineral content in their diet, which is not found in maintenance dog foods.

Split meals into several smaller meals throughout the day, to avoid over-eating. Encourage your dog to eat more slowly.

Feed your pooch with good quality dog food with a protein percentage from the upper 20% level to the lower 30% mark. Fat percentage in the food is suggested to be around 12% to 18%.

Interesting Trivia

They are playful but also very calm dogs.

They tend to bark when they are excited.

The Saint Shepherd is a great family dog who gets along well with children. They are fast learners.

History

The Belgian Malinois canine breed is one of the varieties of the Belgian shepherd. All are named for Belgian villages: Groenendael, Laekenois, Mechelar (Malinois) and Tervuren. These dogs originated in the 1800s in Belgium and mainly served the purpose of sheepdogs.

Today the Malinois is popular military and a police dog and can be a good family companion in the right home. He ranks 76th among the breeds registered by the AKC.

Appearance

A strong, well-built dog, the Belgian Malinois is squarely built, standing 22 to 26 inches. These medium-large sized dogs have a well-proportioned and elegant body.

They have a short and straight coat, hard enough to be weather resistant, with a dense undercoat. Its coat may be fawn, red and mahogany—with or without black tips.

It has a powerful, flat-topped head with a sharp muzzle, black nose <g class="gr_ gr_13 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="13" data-gr-id="13">and</g> triangle-shaped straight up ears. Its dark brown eyes have an alert expression. It has a thick neck, level back and a low-hanging tail.

Temperament & Behavior

The Belgian Malinois is intelligent and easily trainable breed. They are a loyal, obedient, committed, friendly and affectionate friend. These active canines are highly energetic and terrific at search and rescue, agility, and pretty much anything else you can train him.

They are good with children and would socialize well if taught from <g class="gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del" id="10" data-gr-id="10">puppy hood</g> days. These dogs need extensive socialization from puppy days, and firm, but not harsh, training. It truly thrives on love, and affection, and tasks.

Owing to their territorial traits and herding behavior like chasing,
circling, are often seen in them. Owing to their aggressive and preying characteristics, Malinois are not recommended for first-time dog owners with little or no experience. They prefer cool climates but adapt well to warmer environments.

Care ~ Exercise

These working dogs are very energetic and need plenty of exercises, long walk, jogs, and outdoor activities for them to be mentally and physically stimulated and fit.

Malinois make a great running, hiking, and biking companion, and they excel at agility, herding, and tracking making outstanding working dogs.

These dogs enjoy many games and are huge fans Frisbee and fetch games and are happy to develop a closer bond with their owner<g class="gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style replaceWithoutSep" id="8" data-gr-id="8">.</g>

Grooming

The Malinois is a moderate maintenance dog. The short, smooth, and waterproof coat of the Malinois are easy to groom and take care of. Brushing occasionally with a medium-bristle brush will keep the dog looking his best, distributes skin oils throughout the coat and promote new hair growth too. Since they shed twice a year, during that time brush him daily with a slicker brush will help to remove the loose and tangled hair.

Like other grooming regimes, trim the nails as needed, usually every few weeks. Brush the teeth frequently for high overall health and fresh breath. Bathe him only when needed.

Health Problems

The Belgian Malinois is generally healthy and hardy dogs with a lifespan of 12-14 years. But like all breeds, they’re prone to certain health conditions. These purebred dogs may suffer from minor physical or mental problems including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, eye problems, skin allergies, excessive aggressiveness, etc.

These canines are sensitive to anesthesia. Gather health history of the puppies’ parents from their breeders.

Recommended Health Tests from the National Breed Club

Elbow Evaluation

Hip Evaluation

Ophthalmologist Evaluation

Training

The Belgian Malinois is a highly intelligent and trainable breed. However, they may be stubborn at times and need a confident owner who can command and lead him.

These dogs are hyperactive when training them, and you need to spend a lot of time outdoors as they require a lot of physical and mental stimulation.

Positive reinforcement mixed with affirmative obedience training is the perfect blend for a well-trained Belgian Malinois.

Early socialization from puppy days and obedience training are a must since their adulthood behavior & temperament depends on how good the puppy was trained.

Feeding/Diet

These dogs are highly active and do well on high-quality dog food which is rich in nutrients whether commercial or homemade.

You can work out a diet under the veteran’s guidance which is appropriate for the dog’s age and size (puppy, adult, or full-grown).

The recommended daily amount for a Belgian Malinois is 2-3 cups of high-quality dry food per day, given in 2-3 portions in a day. They are meat dogs and love to eat plenty of meat, and hence, a bone per week or an oxtail suit should suffice their craving.

Do note, they have fast metabolisms, so they may often require more than expected feed. They have a tendency to gain weight, so watch the calories intake for your pooch and do not go overboard with the treats.

Clean, fresh drinking water should be available at all times.

The Pungsan or the Poongsan dog is a medium to large-sized spitz-type Hybrid Dog, that originates from the harsh mountainous regions of Korea and is now considered to be one of the National Treasures of Korea.

These rare breed of hunter dogs were named after the mountainous region of Pungsan (present-day Kimhyǒnggwǒn), the place where they were originally bred.

History

The Pungsan dog is also known as the ‘Poongsan dog’ and is one of only three dog breeds native to Korea (the others breeds are the Sapsali and the Korean Jindo). The Pungsan is the rarest of the three and is practically a rare breed internationally.

The origin and records of the Poongsan dogs are absent and their heritage is speculated to date back to the Joseon Dynasty, which lasted from 1392 until 1897.

Many people claim that the Pungsans was ultimately the result of dogs mating with wolves in the area which is credited for their hunting ability, cleverness, and their aggressive natures. Some stories even refer to a Pungsan dog who defeated a Siberian Tiger in battle.

Developed in the harsh environment of northern Korea, the Pungsans can work in cold weather. The Pungsan dog is not currently recognised by any major kennel clubs.

Appearance

The Pungsan has the characteristics typical of a Spitz breed; a plush double coat, wedge-shaped face, prick ears and a tail that curls over their back. They sport dark brown almond-shaped eyes that are alert.

Their sturdy bodies are strong and well-muscled, allowing for agile movement and great stamina. They are slightly longer than their height giving them an agile and rectangular shape with a broad and deep chest. Their limbs are straight while their paws are well-rounded.

Their abundant, thick coat is well designed to handle the harsh weather of the Korean mountains and comes in white and off-white shades.

Temperament & Personality

These dogs are known to be protective and very loyal canines when it comes to their owners and their property. They are strong, agile, intelligent, affectionate and independent pooches.

A loving pooch for the family who thrives on strong human bond, the Pungsan is a family companion that loves its people and participates in the household chores.

Owing to their high prey drive instincts, the Pungsan dog makes it a poor fit for households with mixed pets, as they may tend to be aggressive with small pets like cats, rabbits, etc. With early socialization, it can learn to be gentle with other animals and pets and co-exist with them.

While they do have strong territorial instincts, they are not prone to barking unless it is truly needed, making them excellent guard dogs and watchdogs.

This breed is not recommended for the first time owners and requires a dominant and strong owner to be the leader.

Care ~ Excercise

Being an active breed it requires an hour of rigorous exercise schedules with proper mental stimulation daily to stay healthy and fit.

Pungsan will love to go for long, brisk walks on a leash, as well as runs and jogs beside you while you ride a cycle or bike.

The improper workout schedules make them restless and might even develop destructive activities like barking & chewing, etc to combat boredom.

Grooming

Pungsan dogs require frequent brushing to clean their dead furs as they are heavy shedders. 2-3 times brushing a week will suffice its cleaning requirements. However, during their shedding season, they may require brushing and cleaning twice a day.

Clip the nails on a monthly basis and the teeth, which should be cleaned a few times per week. Bathing is necessary only when it gets dirty or has a bad odor. Their ears may be prone to infections due to water, dirt buildup and need regular checking to prevent infections and pain.

Health Problems

The Pungsan dog is a healthy breed with less genetic and health issues. However, it may suffer from some health problems namely;

Bloating

Gastric Dilation Volvulus (GDV)

Hip and Elbow Dysplasia

It is advisable to visit the vet occasionally to minimize the risk.

Training

Pungsan puppies are intelligent canines and can take up commands quickly if they desire. But, owing to their stubborn nature at times, they can be difficult to train. They need a dominating and consistent trainer who can lead him with authority.

Socialization: It means training your puppy or adult dog to accept new people, animals, by visiting various new places like dog parks, walks and more. By exposing him to these things and situations, your pet will adapt well to new surroundings and come over it fears and phobias. Well, socialized dogs are less likely to develop behavior problems and are generally more welcomed by others.

Obedience & Leash Training: Leash training is crucial to minimize its preying and chasing instincts. Start from an early age to make it familiar with the leash. When it plays or during its meal time apply the leash and take a short walk around the room or the garden and when it ultimately gets familiar take them out.

Try to end training on a positive note and reward your pet with treats for a good training session. This keeps training fun for you and your pet. Next time, your dog will be excited when it is time to practice!

Diet/Feeding

These hardy dogs need high-quality food or homemade food that is nutritious and rich in fat, carbohydrates, and protein. You can offer them 2-2.5 of dry kibbles depending on his age and size to meet their energy requirements.

They are prone to obesity and bloating, and it is essential to visit a vet before opting for a fatty diet. Try to offer them small meals multiple times a day and prevent heavy exercises to minimize the risk of obesity.

Temperament and Behavior

An Alusky is an energetic, charming, loyal, outgoing, and playful dog breed. They are a very social and active breed, getting along quite well with guests and strangers. This friendly trait makes them unreliable watchdogs.

They have an inherent prey drive, which means they might chase smaller animals including cats, squirrels, rabbits, and other dogs. So you need to train your dog to remain near you while walking on a leash, and you also need to raise your puppy with other pets so that he socialize properly with them.

However, they can at times be stubborn, headstrong, and a little temperamental in their nature. They are also known for their good memory, which can make it difficult for them to forget unpleasant situations and behavior towards them.

<g class="gr_ gr_122 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="122" data-gr-id="122">Aluskies</g> won’t do well when they are left alone for extended periods of time. They are quickly bored and become destructive if they aren’t involved in family activities and given plenty of attention.

These pets can so well apartment lifestyle, provided they get considerable playing time. Since these husky mix dogs are known for their digging abilities, they will also be happier if they have access to a fenced yard and an area where they can dig freely.

Care

Exercising or running it in hot and humid conditions should be avoided.

Besides physical exercise, it is advisable to provide these dogs with proper mental stimulation and dome playtime with toys will keep them amused and prevent them from getting bored and engaging in destructive behaviors.

Grooming

The Husky Malamute Mix shed a lot, all year round, but even more seasonally. They should be brushed daily undercoat rake or a slicker brush is necessary during spring and fall since it sheds heavily during these seasons.
Obedience training is important for puppies to learn the rules of the house, as well as to learn basic commands like “stay” and “sit.”

The English Mastweiler is a designer dog, a deliberate crossbreed between two large the English Mastiff and the Rottweiler.

English Mastiff x Rottweiler = English Mastweiler

Coming from the lineage of the English Mastiff and the Rottweiler, who are muscular dogs designed to guard people and property, the English Mastweiler are alert dogs who make excellent guard dogs due to their watchful and protective nature.

History

This canine mix breed was said to have been developed by a group of dog enthusiasts in Birmingham with the intention of creating a Molosser breed with a large body-buildup.

They needed it to be better than the English Mastiff in terms of guarding abilities, alertness, agility, and discharging duties assigned by police and military officials.

Hence, the Rottweilers were imported from Germany and were crossed with the English Mastiffs, Bullmastiffs, and Neapolitan Mastiff in the United Kingdom to get the new breed with qualities of both parents.

Appearance

Belonging to the category of a bandogge, this canine breed shows inconsistency as far as its body structure is concerned as it may be tall, heavy and muscular in appearance or even have a short and lean structure.

This breed of dogs is muscular and well-built in size, with a broad head, strong muzzle, and loose sagging skin.

The coat of English Mastweiler is short, fine and flat, with a thick undercoat and may take coloration from their parents. It differs in dark brindle colorings, but also allowed in solid fawn, wheaten, red and brown shades, although some black, black-n-tan, as well as dogs with white markings, can be encountered on occasion.

Temperament and Personality Traits

The English Mastweiler is known to be even-tempered, calm and affectionate dogs and makes good family pets. They are typically used as guard dogs because of their alert and attentive nature.

This canine breed is generally less boisterous than most dogs of their size, due to the nature of the English Mastiff, and they tend to be easy going, laid back and loving towards children.

They are very loyal to their owners and are highly protective of its household and territory, going to any extent to safeguard them, just like their Rottweiler and Mastiff parents.

Though the English Mastweiler does alright in warmer weather but prefers cooler temperatures.

Care: Exercise

The Mastweilers is an active and agile dog and requires a moderate amount of exercise daily for mental and physical fitness.

Daily walks and plenty of play opportunities are necessary for English Mastweiler health.

Grooming

These dogs have quite simple grooming requirements as this mix dog’s coat is short and manageable.

Although they require regular brushing with a soft bristle brush to control the shedding and distribute their body oil. A bath every month or two is typically adequate for these dogs to keep their ears and eyes clean.

Your pet may inherit the folds or wrinkles commonly seen on English Mastiffs. You should check on a regular basis to ensure that the folds of skin have not trapped any moisture or contaminants as these can cause skin irritation and a foul odor may develop. Cleaning them with a mild wet cloth or wiping them gently will help to keep the hygiene levels.

Health Problems

The Mastweiler has an average life-span of 8-12 years. They are allergic to certain foods like chicken and corn and has a sensitive stomach and digestive system.

This canine breed may suffer from

Eye disorders and diseases

Hip And Elbow Dysplasia

Training

These sharp dogs are quick learns and have fast grasping powers. However, in the initial days, they show little resistance for training and may give their owners a tough time.

A patient yet commanding trainer will lead them in a proper direction.

They are quite intelligent and can learn quickly. Socialization and training should be done early puppy days, this may help in developing their personality and help them mingle with other pets and kids.

Feeding/Diet

You can feed them with four and a half to six cups of good quality dry dog food three times a day.

A balance of nutritious and protein-rich food in their daily diet to keep them healthy.

As they often have problems of with the stomach be careful about the kind of food you are providing them.

The Dogue De Bordeaux falls under the purebred category which is also popular as “French Mastiff”.

It has a massive body structure with a stud built. This powerful breed has its presence in ancient French histories. The muscular dogs were called working dogs and guard dogs as they were used for pulling carts and guarding cattle and sheep. The presence of this dog is also evident in the various castles of ancient Europe.

History & Origin

In the early fourteenth century, a large species of canine was found in southern France particularly around Bordeaux. The dog acquired their name from the place of their habitats. But, uniform breeds started to develop after 1920.

Initially, two varieties of Dogue De Bordeaux were present. The bigger variety was called Dougue while the considerably smaller type was popular as Doguin, nowadays whose presence is only available in books and photographs.

A theory says this breed predated from the Bordeaux bulldog and the bullmastiff. But other theories believe that Dogue De Bordeaux originated from the Tibetan Mastiff. In 1989, an American comedy movie named Turner & Hooch portrayed the story of a police with his canine partner.

Dogue De Bordeaux breed was used as the pooch here, which helped the breed regain its popularity in recent times

The Mastador is a designer crossbreed between the Labrador Retriever and ancient guarding breed, the English Mastiff.

Labrador Retriever * English Mastiff

Mastador is a hybrid with a large body structure but, its friendly nature makes it an ideal furry friend for a family. Usually, they are well adjusting with humans and other animals.

Their protective nature makes Mastador a perfect watchdog. Though some of the dogs seem to be very stubborn generally, they can be easily trained and socialized at early ages.

Origin & History

Mastadors were first designed and made in the U.S. It is not a pure breed so; Mastador breed does get registered to American Kennel Club (AKC). But, their parent breeds have high standings and are well recognized by AKC.

The Labrador Retriever is referred to as gun dog that has special skills for retrieving waterfowls while the Mastiff Breed has a friendly nature with a giant size. English Mastiff breeds have an immense historical importance. There are records which say that this breed marched alongside Hannibal Army when the troops crossed the mountain ranges of Alps.

Even the breed’s presence has been witnessed on the ancient Mesopotamian artworks and stone carvings that were discovered from various archeological sites of Asia. During the two World Wars, the European canine population got catastrophically affected.

There was a shortage of proper food supply which led to almost extinction till the war ended. In order to revive the breed, mastiff puppies were brought from Canada and the United States. Labrador Retriever has originated from St. John’s dog. They worked as a companion with the fishermen in New found land.

They had a short coat with an oily texture and their excellent retrieving skills made ideal water dogs. Though Mastador does not falls under pure dog breed category but, their parental breeds are well known and highly appreciated.

Appearance

Mastadors have an athletic build with big structures and long legs. The weight of this breed varies from a range of 85 to 160pounds. The height of the breed may vary from 25 to 36 inch.

The generation where the dominant breed is Mastiff, the structure seems to bigger and heavier than the generation where the latter is Labrador Retriever.

Mastador breed dogs usually have a wide head with wrinkles on their muzzle. They have a pair of almond-shaped eyes, the color of which may vary from black to hazel. The triangular shaped ears are adapted from the parent breeds, particularly Labrador Retrievers.

This breed comes in various solid color shades of golden, chocolate and black. The brindle skin coat is a double layer with thick small hairs that may sometimes have wavy patterns. Black and white patches on the chest and feet are also witnessed in some of the dogs.

On the face of this dog breed, where more Mastiff features have been adapted, black face musk is usually witnessed. The nose color is either black or brown and similar to Labradors. It has a straight fur with moderate length and density.

Temperament and Personality

Mastadors are very affectionate and playful. Their protective nature and human-friendly attitude make them an ideal pooch for the family. They calm temperament and can easily be trained at early ages.

Mastadors are generally friendly with other animals so it can be kept with multiple pets. But, regular exercise is a must for this breed as they have high energy levels.

They are very loyal to their masters and can go to any extent in order to protect the person. This dog shares a good relation with kids.

Socializing and training should be started at a young age since some of the dogs seem to acquire stubbornness in the adult age similar to their parent Mastiff breed.

Care

Exercise

Mastadors are strong and a large dog breed, so their owners need to schedule in daily walks and routine, active playtimes. Regular exercise is very essential for keeping the dog in the right health. These dogs have big body structures which have to be maintained properly.

Regular walks for an hour is more than enough to keep the dog’s health and mind in proper condition. Activities, like jumping and leaping, should not be practiced to avoid bone stress and fractures.

Grooming

Extensive grooming requirements are not required by the Mastador breed. Their short hairs and oily skin coat make it easy for the dogs to remove dirt and water by itself. So, in the ideal case, a monthly bath is enough for this dog breed.

Mastadors are very fond of playing in the water and their long and big ear structures make them prone to bacterial and infections auditory canal. So, the ears have to be checked and cleaned at regular intervals to avoid major infections.

The paws should be cleaned regularly as the active nature keeps the dog busy throughout the day.

In order to maintain a good fur coat, the dog should be combed and brushed at least once a week. Brushing helps the natural oil to spread and mix throughout the coat and the process also helps in the removal of loose hairs and new hair growth.

Health Problems

Mastadors has a usual lifespan varies from 10 to 15years. Despite being crossbred, both of your pup’s parents should be fully health tested.

Hip Dysplasia is common at old ages.

Even the bacterial infections in their floppy ears with yellow texture and funky smell are quite usual.

Training

Mastadors can be trained with multiple handlers and is not a one master dog. But if you keep this canine breed to guard your house, you are sure to hear heavy barking on arrival of any stranger.

They are good jumpers and a six feet fence can easily be crossed by them. Excessive training in temperate conditions should be avoided. The grown-up dogs are hard to train.

Feeding/Diet

As a large and active dog, the Lab Mastiff Mix will require approximately 2-1/2 to 3 cups of high-quality dry food daily. Food type should be designed specifically for large breeds.

For an adult Mastador Dog, 3.5 cups of dog food are required. If you give to give whole meat to your dog then, around 300gm of regular protein is preferable for the breed.

Mastador Puppies

Lab Mastiff Puppies are cute and bursting with energy during their early years, so need a family that can devote time to keeping them active and engaged as patient and consistent and uses rewards-based training.

From 1 day to 6months of age, the height and weight of Mastador puppies may vary from 16 to 17 inches and 67lbs to 77lbs respectively. Six months onward to twelve months of age the weight ranges to 100lbs and the height becomes 25 inches.

For the first twenty-eight days; mother’s milk is the ideal food source of the puppies. Training should be started at a young age.

History of Caucasian Ovcharka

It’s believed that the Caucasian Shepherd dogs have been around for more than 2,000 years. Although its first official Show-Ring appearance outside the Caucasus was in the 1930s in Germany, the Caucasian Mountain Dog has existed since ancient times, like many Eastern Molossers.

It is believed they might be related to the Tibetan Mastiff or the Anatolian Shepherd. Many types of research show the Caucasian dog as being a close relative of sheepdogs of the Balkans and mastiffs of Asia.

In ancient times the Caucasian Ovcharka Dogs were used for the guarding and safe-keeping of herds, flocks, and dwellings from predators.

Now, Caucasian shepherd dog is a fully standardized breed recognized by the major kennel organizations, including FCI, AKC, and UKC.

Types of According to Coat Type

For almost a century, there has been two breed types and standards:

The Mountain Type: The long-coated variety and has a heavier body mass than the other one.

The Steppe Type: The short-coat variety or, the Kazbek types with lighter body mass.

Temperament and Behavior

The Caucasian Mountain dog is a confident, bold, fearless, and fierce when a threat is present, but he is soft, devoted, kind and endearing to his family,

These dogs are very strong and are considered an extremely intelligent breed with a big instinct to protect anyone in the family including pets, livestock, making excellent watchdogs and livestock guard dogs.

The Ovcharka is incredibly loyal to his owners but fierce in their defense. They are not high energy dogs, but their size demands space, and so they are usually not recommended for apartment life.

It is recommended not leave them alone with children, else they might mess trying to be over-protective. They are not too friendly with strangers but would welcome family friends. However, properly trained ones have earned obedience and Canine Good Citizen titles, and some are even therapy dogs.

Care

Exercise

Exercise, daily walks and playtime should be a crucial part of the Caucasian Shepherd dog daily routine life to help prevent obesity.

Outdoor activities such as hiking, chasing balls and retrieving flying discs can be a good outlet of releasing energy.

Even though it is a low energy dog, he should have good endurance for walking and hiking. Some breeders encourage endurance tests.

Grooming

The Caucasian Shepherd has a variety of coat types, Long and Short.

The coat of the long-haired variety requires frequent brushings, paying special attention to the spots where tangles may occur. Longer-coated dogs need to be groomed daily.

The shorthaired variety needs less grooming, but should still be combed and brushed.

Their ears should be regularly checked to avoid a buildup of wax and debris which can result in an infection.

Their fast-growing nails should be trimmed regularly with a nail clipper or grinder to avoid overgrowth, splitting and cracking. Teeth should be brushed regularly.

Health Issues

The Caucasian Mountain Dog is generally healthy and long-lived with a lifespan of 10-12 years

However, like many giant dog breeds, they may suffer from some health issues in the form of

Hip dysplasia

Obesity

Occasional heart problems,

but the majority of these dogs are healthy if taken care of correctly.

Working with a responsible breeder, those wishing to own a Caucasian Shepherd can gain the education they need to know about specific health concerns within the breed.

Training

Caucasian Ovcharka dogs are usually not easy to train. This breed is very assertive and strong-willed and will need to be taught basic manners and good behavior from a very young age.

The Caucasian Ovcharka requires a very strong and confident leader that consistently exerts their place as head of the pack. So be sure to lead the dog while jwalking to ensure your own pack leadership.

Talk to his trainer about instituting a nothing-in-life-is-free program, requiring the puppy to “work” by performing a command before he receives toys, meals, treats or play.

Feeding/Diet

The huge Caucasian Ovcharka Dog has a huge appetite. You should feed this canine breed with high-quality food which should provide necessary nutrition.

Feed the young puppies 2-3 times a day, and adults 1-2 times daily. A high-quality dry dog food is also recommended for a healthy diet. Clean and fresh water in large bowls should be available at all times.

Feeding your dog is a personal choice, but working with your veterinarian and/or breeder will be the best way to determine the frequency of meals as a puppy and the best adult diet to increase his longevity.

Caucasian Ovcharka Puppies

The training of the pups should begin as early in life as possible, and socialization is practically a must.

Proper socialization training has to be done to overcome the breed’s apprehension around new people and animals, which can result in aggression.

And note that Ovcharka puppies are inveterate chewers, so don’t give them the roam of the house until they’ve reached maturity.
