Belgian Malinois is originally a herding dog breed, which is a widely popular dog in Europe and the US. The Malinois is extensively used in protection and law enforcement for crime and police tasks like detecting odors of explosives, drugs, tracking criminals, in search works and rescue missions etc. They are highly sought after as police and military K-9s.

History

The Belgian Malinois canine breed is one of the varieties of the Belgian shepherd. All are named for Belgian villages: Groenendael, Laekenois, Mechelar (Malinois) and Tervuren. These dogs originated in the 1800s in Belgium and mainly served the purpose of sheepdogs.

Today the Malinois is popular military and a police dog and can be a good family companion in the right home. He ranks 76th among the breeds registered by the AKC.

Appearance

A strong, well-built dog, the Belgian Malinois is squarely built, standing 22 to 26 inches. These medium-large sized dogs have a well-proportioned and elegant body.

They have a short and straight coat, hard enough to be weather resistant, with a dense undercoat. Its coat may be fawn, red and mahogany—with or without black tips.

It has a powerful, flat-topped head with a sharp muzzle, black nose <g class="gr_ gr_13 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="13" data-gr-id="13">and</g> triangle-shaped straight up ears. Its dark brown eyes have an alert expression. It has a thick neck, level back and a low-hanging tail.

Shedding: Belgian Malinois is a moderate shedder. However, it sheds heavily only twice every year.

Temperament & Behavior

The Belgian Malinois is intelligent and easily trainable breed. They are a loyal, obedient, committed, friendly and affectionate friend. These active canines are highly energetic and terrific at search and rescue, agility, and pretty much anything else you can train him.

They are good with children and would socialize well if taught from <g class="gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del" id="10" data-gr-id="10">puppy hood</g> days. These dogs need extensive socialization from puppy days, and firm, but not harsh, training. It truly thrives on love, and affection, and tasks.

Owing to their territorial traits and herding behavior like chasing,
circling, are often seen in them. Owing to their aggressive and preying characteristics, Malinois are not recommended for first-time dog owners with little or no experience. They prefer cool climates but adapt well to warmer environments.

Care ~ Exercise

These working dogs are very energetic and need plenty of exercises, long walk, jogs, and outdoor activities for them to be mentally and physically stimulated and fit.

Malinois make a great running, hiking, and biking companion, and they excel at agility, herding, and tracking making outstanding working dogs.

These dogs enjoy many games and are huge fans Frisbee and fetch games and are happy to develop a closer bond with their owner<g class="gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style replaceWithoutSep" id="8" data-gr-id="8">.</g>

Grooming

The Malinois is a moderate maintenance dog. The short, smooth, and waterproof coat of the Malinois are easy to groom and take care of. Brushing occasionally with a medium-bristle brush will keep the dog looking his best, distributes skin oils throughout the coat and promote new hair growth too. Since they shed twice a year, during that time brush him daily with a slicker brush will help to remove the loose and tangled hair.

Like other grooming regimes, trim the nails as needed, usually every few weeks. Brush the teeth frequently for high overall health and fresh breath. Bathe him only when needed.

Health Problems

The Belgian Malinois is generally healthy and hardy dogs with a lifespan of 12-14 years. But like all breeds, they’re prone to certain health conditions. These purebred dogs may suffer from minor physical or mental problems including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, eye problems, skin allergies, excessive aggressiveness, etc.

These canines are sensitive to anesthesia. Gather health history of the puppies’ parents from their breeders.

Recommended Health Tests from the National Breed Club

Elbow Evaluation

Hip Evaluation

Ophthalmologist Evaluation

Training

The Belgian Malinois is a highly intelligent and trainable breed. However, they may be stubborn at times and need a confident owner who can command and lead him.

These dogs are hyperactive when training them, and you need to spend a lot of time outdoors as they require a lot of physical and mental stimulation.

Positive reinforcement mixed with affirmative obedience training is the perfect blend for a well-trained Belgian Malinois.

Early socialization from puppy days and obedience training are a must since their adulthood behavior & temperament depends on how good the puppy was trained.

Feeding/Diet

These dogs are highly active and do well on high-quality dog food which is rich in nutrients whether commercial or homemade.

You can work out a diet under the veteran’s guidance which is appropriate for the dog’s age and size (puppy, adult, or full-grown).

The recommended daily amount for a Belgian Malinois is 2-3 cups of high-quality dry food per day, given in 2-3 portions in a day. They are meat dogs and love to eat plenty of meat, and hence, a bone per week or an oxtail suit should suffice their craving.

Do note, they have fast metabolisms, so they may often require more than expected feed. They have a tendency to gain weight, so watch the calories intake for your pooch and do not go overboard with the treats.

The Dogue De Bordeaux falls under the purebred category which is also popular as “French Mastiff”.

It has a massive body structure with a stud built. This powerful breed has its presence in ancient French histories. The muscular dogs were called working dogs and guard dogs as they were used for pulling carts and guarding cattle and sheep. The presence of this dog is also evident in the various castles of ancient Europe.

History & Origin

In the early fourteenth century, a large species of canine was found in southern France particularly around Bordeaux. The dog acquired their name from the place of their habitats. But, uniform breeds started to develop after 1920.

Initially, two varieties of Dogue De Bordeaux were present. The bigger variety was called Dougue while the considerably smaller type was popular as Doguin, nowadays whose presence is only available in books and photographs.

A theory says this breed predated from the Bordeaux bulldog and the bullmastiff. But other theories believe that Dogue De Bordeaux originated from the Tibetan Mastiff. In 1989, an American comedy movie named Turner & Hooch portrayed the story of a police with his canine partner.

Dogue De Bordeaux breed was used as the pooch here, which helped the breed regain its popularity in recent times

History of Caucasian Ovcharka

It’s believed that the Caucasian Shepherd dogs have been around for more than 2,000 years. Although its first official Show-Ring appearance outside the Caucasus was in the 1930s in Germany, the Caucasian Mountain Dog has existed since ancient times, like many Eastern Molossers.

It is believed they might be related to the Tibetan Mastiff or the Anatolian Shepherd. Many types of research show the Caucasian dog as being a close relative of sheepdogs of the Balkans and mastiffs of Asia.

In ancient times the Caucasian Ovcharka Dogs were used for the guarding and safe-keeping of herds, flocks, and dwellings from predators.

Now, Caucasian shepherd dog is a fully standardized breed recognized by the major kennel organizations, including FCI, AKC, and UKC.

Types of According to Coat Type

For almost a century, there has been two breed types and standards:

The Mountain Type: The long-coated variety and has a heavier body mass than the other one.

The Steppe Type: The short-coat variety or, the Kazbek types with lighter body mass.

Temperament and Behavior

The Caucasian Mountain dog is a confident, bold, fearless, and fierce when a threat is present, but he is soft, devoted, kind and endearing to his family,

These dogs are very strong and are considered an extremely intelligent breed with a big instinct to protect anyone in the family including pets, livestock, making excellent watchdogs and livestock guard dogs.

The Ovcharka is incredibly loyal to his owners but fierce in their defense. They are not high energy dogs, but their size demands space, and so they are usually not recommended for apartment life.

It is recommended not leave them alone with children, else they might mess trying to be over-protective. They are not too friendly with strangers but would welcome family friends. However, properly trained ones have earned obedience and Canine Good Citizen titles, and some are even therapy dogs.

Care

Exercise

Exercise, daily walks and playtime should be a crucial part of the Caucasian Shepherd dog daily routine life to help prevent obesity.

Outdoor activities such as hiking, chasing balls and retrieving flying discs can be a good outlet of releasing energy.

Even though it is a low energy dog, he should have good endurance for walking and hiking. Some breeders encourage endurance tests.

Grooming

The Caucasian Shepherd has a variety of coat types, Long and Short.

The coat of the long-haired variety requires frequent brushings, paying special attention to the spots where tangles may occur. Longer-coated dogs need to be groomed daily.

The shorthaired variety needs less grooming, but should still be combed and brushed.

Their ears should be regularly checked to avoid a buildup of wax and debris which can result in an infection.

Their fast-growing nails should be trimmed regularly with a nail clipper or grinder to avoid overgrowth, splitting and cracking. Teeth should be brushed regularly.

Health Issues

The Caucasian Mountain Dog is generally healthy and long-lived with a lifespan of 10-12 years

However, like many giant dog breeds, they may suffer from some health issues in the form of

Hip dysplasia

Obesity

Occasional heart problems,

but the majority of these dogs are healthy if taken care of correctly.

Working with a responsible breeder, those wishing to own a Caucasian Shepherd can gain the education they need to know about specific health concerns within the breed.

Training

Caucasian Ovcharka dogs are usually not easy to train. This breed is very assertive and strong-willed and will need to be taught basic manners and good behavior from a very young age.

The Caucasian Ovcharka requires a very strong and confident leader that consistently exerts their place as head of the pack. So be sure to lead the dog while jwalking to ensure your own pack leadership.

Talk to his trainer about instituting a nothing-in-life-is-free program, requiring the puppy to “work” by performing a command before he receives toys, meals, treats or play.

Feeding/Diet

The huge Caucasian Ovcharka Dog has a huge appetite. You should feed this canine breed with high-quality food which should provide necessary nutrition.

Feed the young puppies 2-3 times a day, and adults 1-2 times daily. A high-quality dry dog food is also recommended for a healthy diet. Clean and fresh water in large bowls should be available at all times.

Feeding your dog is a personal choice, but working with your veterinarian and/or breeder will be the best way to determine the frequency of meals as a puppy and the best adult diet to increase his longevity.

Caucasian Ovcharka Puppies

The training of the pups should begin as early in life as possible, and socialization is practically a must.

Proper socialization training has to be done to overcome the breed’s apprehension around new people and animals, which can result in aggression.

And note that Ovcharka puppies are inveterate chewers, so don’t give them the roam of the house until they’ve reached maturity.

The sleek Xoloitzcuintli is a purebred dog breed which is a very rare breed of dog that is actually considered a national treasure in Mexico. These are unique dogs, with a unique name.

The Xoloitzcuintli Pronunciation ~ It’s pronounced “show-low-eetz-kweent-lee.” Or take the easy way out and just call him the “Xolo” pronounced as show-low. He’s also known as the “Mexican Hairless“.

History and Origin

Xoloitzcuintli is a very ancient Latin American breed, dating back to before the time of the Aztec Empire and its existence can be substantiated for as far back as three thousand years.

The very name of the canine developed from the Aztec god Xolotl and their word for ‘dog’- Itzcuintli.

Never entirely forgotten, interest in the breed was eventually revived and it was formally recognized by the FCM (Mexican Kennel Club) in 1956.

The Xolo today is being acknowledged widely for its companionship, loyalty, cleanliness, and flexibility to do it all!

These unique dogs have a hairless body that actually radiates heat more intensely than a coated dog does. Owing to this they were believed to hold healing powers and were called “Doctor Dogs” and were thought to cure asthma, rheumatism, toothaches, and insomnia, as well as draw out pain and sickness.

They make great companions, show, agility, obedience, therapy and service dogs.

The breed is not well known in the United States. As a result, the Xolo has been mistaken for the mythical Chupacabras of Mexico.

The Xoloitzcuintle is the symbol of Club Tijuana, a Mexican professional football club.

Appearance of Xoloitzcuintli

The almond-shaped eyes, bat-like ears, long muzzle, legs, and neck, is a very old breed of Mexican dogs (not to be confused with the almost similar looking ‘Peruvian Hairless Dog’) popular for its trait of hairlessness, however, they might have hair-tufts on the head and tail or, one out of five in an average litter.

Variations/Sizes of Xoloitzcuintli Dogs

Miniature Xoloitzcuintli: With height 15 – 20 inches at the shoulder and with weight around 15 – 30 pounds. These are recognized by dog clubs like FCI, NKC, CKC, APRI, DRA, NAPR, ACA.

Standard Xoloitzcuintli: With height 20 – 30 inches at the shoulder and with weight around 25 – 40 pounds. They have been recognized by dog clubs like FCI, NKC, CKC, APRI, DRA, NAPR, ACA.

Temperament & Behaviour Traits

The Xoloitzcuintli’s ‘primitive’ temperament (very high intelligence, sensitivity, high energy, inquisitiveness, strong hunting, and social instincts) is apparent because the breed’s temperament was not modified overall by selective breeding in their native history in Mexico.

These South American dogs are very attached to their owners. They will want to be with you always, so your Xolo will never run away from home. Don’t be surprised if your dog is emotionally tuned into you.

If you’re sad, your Xolo will know and want to comfort you. He makes a great watchdog, but not a good guard dog. When strangers come over to visit, your Xolo may be aloof to their presence.

The Xolo holds many excellent characteristics such as loyalty, friendliness, alertness, intelligence, and an overall loving nature.

He needs to be with people and can’t be left alone all day. If you’re away from home for long periods of time, the Xoloitzcuintli is not the dog for you.

This breed is becoming very popular in agility, therapy, and obedience. The typical Xoloitzcuintli temperament is very calm and tranquil, and they don’t bark often which is great for apartment dwellers or people with close neighbors.

Care: Exercise, Grooming & Health Problems

Exercise: The smaller Xolo was bred as a companion and larger Xolo for protection. Both the miniature and the standard variety of Xoloitzcuintli should be taken for daily jogging or walks for fulfilling their primitive walking instincts and prey drive. It is good to let them play around in an open but fenced yard. Dogs that do not get to go on daily walks are more likely to display behavior problems.

Grooming: The grooming requirements are obviously easy and minimal for a hairless dog, but they do need to have their skin taken care of.

They also need to be occasionally bathed, exfoliated, and moisturized to keep clean and hygienic. Using baby products or products for gentle skin is recommended. However, do not wash or moisturize too often because it can clog the dog’s pores, or strip their skin of the natural oils, which would not be safe.

Both types will also require regular visits to the vet, regular teeth brushing and nail clipping, etc.

Look out for skin dryness, rashes, redness, in which case, consult the vet instantly. These basically indoor dogs would not withstand too much heat or cold and must not be kept outdoors for long hours

Health Problems: This breed can have a few health issues such as food allergies and missing teeth. The Xoloitzcuintli has a long lifespan of 15 to 20 years. However, the main problem for them is their sensitive skin.

They can suffer from acne and bumps on the skin. Most skin problems arise from poor breeding, neglect, or over-bathing and over-lotioning, stripping natural protections and clogging pores

Training of Xoloitzcuintli

Because this is an intelligent breed, expect your Xoloitzcuintli to catch onto lessons easily. This is a dog that needs to be trained throughout his life – they have a quench to learn!

Start training sessions while they are young and keep it consistent. Don’t let your Xolo take over the lessons, so keep them engaged with interesting activities. Rewards and praise go a long way with Xolos, while negativity and yelling will get you nowhere. Make training a family affair so that everyone knows how to properly handle and treat your Xolo.

Housetraining may prove to be a challenge. Crate training will come in handy, as the Xoloitzcuintli likes a clean living space.

Feeding & Diet

The Xoloitzcuintli should be fed a diet of high-quality food. The breed is partial to fruits and vegetables, so feel free to liberally add these to your dog’s meal. If you are feeding your dog meat, it should be low in fat.

On an average, an adult Xolo should eat 5/8 th to 1 ¾ cups of high-quality dog food daily, divided into two meals.

Commercial dog food is also acceptable, even though these dogs often have fewer teeth than their canine counterparts.

Xoloitzcuintli Puppies

Xoloitzcuintli puppies are quite active – they love to play and run around. With the toy and miniature versions of this breed, you’ll need to watch them around children due to their small size.

Origin & History

The American English Coonhound was initially brought to the United States by European settlers during the 17th and 18th centuries. First called “Virginia Hounds (and imported to the U.S. by Robert Brooke, Thomas Walker, and George Washington), the American Coonhound was bred to adapt to a more rigorous terrain.

These dogs were used to hunt raccoons and the American Red Fox. The American Coonhound was also used to hunt opossums, cougars, deer, boars, bobcats, and bears. In 1905 the English Coonhound was first registered by UKC under the name of English Fox & Coonhound and was recognized by the AKC in June 2011.

Temperament/Behavior of English Coonhound

A well-mannered dog, the American English Coonhound, is a loving and loyal family companion that is pleasant to humans and other dogs. They may tend to be active and quite loud. These hunting breed dogs love to roam and follow every interesting scent and sound. Because they love to roam, this breed should be kept on a leash when it is not in an enclosed area.

The American English Coonhound is curious and will sniff and eat items left out on the counter. Since they like to chew anything it can, so its advisable not to keep anything lying around that you’d like to see remain intact.

It has a high chasing instinct and is not suitable for families with small household pets unless trained otherwise. It will protect its family when threatened but usually won’t attack without provocation. It is watchful of its territory and will howl loudly at the sight of anything suspicious.

Care ~ Exercise, Grooming and Health Problems

Exercise: This is a high-energy breed that needs plenty of daily exercises to burn its energy. You may also train it for hunting, tracking, or field trials. As a family, you can enjoy playing games such as fetch and hide-and-seek with your dog, along with long brisk walks.

Active families can make American English Coonhound a jogging or biking partner. This breed is happy when they get plenty of mental and physical stimulation. They can become destructive if they become bored, depressed, frustrated, anxious or hyperactive.

Grooming: The American English Coonhound is a low maintenance breed. Their coat needs occasional brushing using a hound glove or soft bristle brush. You should regularly clean their ears to prevent irritation and infections.

American English Coonhounds do shed, and many of them shed very, very heavily. Many breed members will completely cover furniture, clothes, and carpets with hair, and this breed would be a poor choice for an allergy sufferer or merely someone who hates the thought of cleaning up dog hair.

Health Problems: A relatively healthy breed, the English Coonhound has an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years. Due to its size, the American English Coonhound’s most common health issue is hip dysplasia.

Other health problems that may occur in this breed include ear infections, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and polyradiculoneuritis.

Training Requirements

To train your American English Coonhound, you’ll need to possess a kind but firm hand. With sufficient exercise, socialization, and training they make a fantastic four-legged best friend.

As the leader, you should always maintain calm, confident, and assert consistent authority while training.

The American English Coonhound is easily distracted and likes to learn at its own pace, you may find that it will take more time, repetition and patience. Some American English Coonhounds have a one-track mind – they’ll only be interested in hunting and treeing its prey.

With these types of dogs, use extra motivation in order to instill basic obedience skills. If you ignore your American English Coonhound’s training, expect him to take on dominant or shyness traits.

Diet/Feeding

The English Coonhound is an active breed and naturally consumes more food than a normal dog. It is recommended to choose a diet that is free of unnecessary additives such as corn or grain, rich in meat protein high-quality diet.

It is also recommended to divide the daily consumption into 2-3 meals a day instead of leaving it available all the time to help your companion maintain a healthy weight and avoid boredom eating.

Puppies

Socialization and training should start at an early age for American English Coonhounds and should continue to be an important factor for the rest of its life.

Interesting Facts

They were developed as a hunting breed that can maneuver the rough terrain of the Southern United States.

They are fairly rare breed and hard to find.

The Bluetick Hounds and Treeing Walkers were also known as American English Coonhounds before they were officially recognized as a separate breed.

One of the four major breeds of dogs in the mountains in Switzerland, Bernese Mountain Dog plays a major role in the lifestyle of the people there. With some great physical characteristics, the Dog is really the true companions for the people in the Swiss Alps.

Categorized as the best among all ‘Working Dogs,’ these Dogs are blessed with special physical and mental abilities that other mountain dogs do not have. Due to its amazing physical abilities, the dog can adapt itself according to the changing climate and weather easily.

They love their masters and do not hesitate to sacrifice their lives while saving the lives of their masters.

History of St Bernese Mountain Dogs

Among more than 22,000 species of dog, the Bernese Mountain Dog is one of the most popular ones. Though the origin of this dog species is not confirmed, the historians say that the ‘top working dogs’ are originally from the mountain regions in Berne in Switzerland.

Strong and hardworking, the Bernese Mountain Dog is accepted as the true companion of the people there, especially the farmers who use them to protect their farms and to escort their cattle.

These dogs are believed to be the most enchanting watchdogs that are remarkably careful and hard working while on duty. It is believed the noted biologist and dog lover Berner Sennenhund introduced this breed of dogs in 1937.

History Of Bully Kutta

Ancient theories suggest that the actual origin of the Bully Kutta is ambiguous. It is believed that during the British invasion, the troops brought to India.

These guard dogs later bred with regional Indian breeds of Mastiffs giving birth to this new Bully Kuttas Breed. There have been many disputes regarding the country of origin of this breed.

Some believe its origin to be India and others claim it to be Pakistan. Bulli Kuttas are also called Indian Alangu Mastiff due to the fact that these dogs originated in Northern India or in the Thanjavur and Thiruchi districts in the South.

The Bully Kutta is popularly known as “The Beast from the East” owing to its extremely aggressive nature.

This breed of dogs is mostly available in Pakistan, however rare in India as in other parts of the world. However, they have been imported to USA, UK, Russia, China, and Central Asian Countries.

Different Types ~ Bully Kutta (With Most Common Variations)

Aseel Bully Kutta

Mastiff Type Bully Kutta

Ancient Type Bully Kutta

Nagi Bully Kutta

Modern Bully Kutta

Temperament & Behaviour Traits

The Bully Kutta is an extremely powerful, high energy, dominant dog breed, and is recommended for experienced and knowledgeable dog owners.

Due to their aggressive temperament and huge body they are dangerous to kids, owners, strangers, and other pets, if not trained and controlled well.

Owing to their big size, they need huge space and are not recommended for apartment life.

The Pakistani Mastiffs are intelligent, noble dogs and have strong protective instincts like smell and sight making them great guard dogs.

These dogs have a tendency to drool and sleep all day. The Bully Kutta Puppies are easy to train as they respond well and can be taught socialization from an early age.

Care ~ Exercise, Grooming & Health Problems

Exercise: These high energy dogs need adequate exercise regularly, to be in shape and stimulate their minds. Take them out on brisk walking and running sessions keeping their migration instinct in mind. When outdoors you need to keep your bully leashed so that they don’t run and get aggressive. The owner should always be dominant and have full control over the Bully Kuttas.

Grooming: This breed has a soft, smooth and fine coat, and is an average shedder. They need little maintenance and grooming. However, some basic grooming is required with an occasional brushing of the coat with a firm bristle brush to keep them clean and tidy. Clipping of the hair is not recommended as it may affect the re-growth of new hair.

Bathing is recommended when required. You can use a damp cloth to wipe the dirt and dust from outdoor activities. Trimming their nails and regular dental check-ups are recommended to keep your dog healthy and fit.

Health Problems: The average lifespan of a Bully Kutta is 8-12 years and are considered to be a healthy breed and are less susceptible to congenital health defects. However, they may be prone to arthritis, skin problems and blindness in later stages of their life.

Diet ~ Feeding Habits

The diet and food habits for this Mastiff requires a lot of your attention. The number of meals per day decrease with age and growth.

Pakistani mastiff or Bully Kutta puppies between 8 to 12 weeks need 3-4 meals per day.

Bully Kutta pups 3 to 6 months old should be fed 3 meals in a day.

Feed pups six months to one-year-old 2 bowls of food per day.

High-quality dry dog feed with balanced nutrients is ideal for full-grown Bully Kuttas.

Their meals should consist of a 40%-50% of meat, being organ meat like kidney, liver etc to meet their protein requirements.

You can serve them with a moderate quantity of canned food, cooked eggs, fruits, and vegetables also as an addition to their normal diet.

A regular supply of adequate drinking water should be available for them.

Bully Kutta Puppies

The Bully Kuttas have a litter size of about 3-5 puppies. The pups are intelligent, cute and easy to train.

You can train them in many ways from their easy days like crate training, socialization, behavioral training, and obedience training.

Proper training to follow commands like sit, stay, come, down, and quiet etc makes them obedient less aggressive.

Fun Facts ~ Bully Kutta

New York Times bestseller author Greg lles depicted this breed in his 2009 novel, The Devil’s Punchbowl.

The word “Bully” comes from the root word of Punjabi (language) “Bohli” which is pronounced as “Boo-Lee” means “heavily wrinkled.” And Kutta is a word of Punjabi or Urdu language which means “dog.” Thus, Bully Kutta means “heavily wrinkled dog.”

Unfortunately, many Bully Kuttas are illegally raised solely for dogfight especially in Pakistan. It is a cruel, bloody sport, enjoyed by hundreds of spectators, mostly ending in either victory or death.

The black-muzzled variety of these dogs is usually preferred and sought for, and any other variation in color (tan/same as the coat color) is considered a fault.

This is a purebred dog, but in recent times, black mouth cur mixes have also been introduced by the breeders like the black mouth cur-pitbull mix, the black mouth cur-lab mix etc.

The AKC group has categorized this breed as ‘Rare’.

A black mouth cur named ‘Old Yeller’ is the protagonist in the 1956 children’s novel of the same name written by Fred Gipson.

History of Scottish Deerhound

The origins of the Scottish Deerhound are lost to a time before recorded history. Deerhounds are closely related to the Greyhound and so in the past has also been called a Scotch Greyhound.

They were used as deer hunting dogs for Scottish tribes in the Middle Ages. Owing to their gentle nature and courage for hunting they became known as the “Royal Dog of Scotland” and no one ranking below earl was permitted to own one.

Due to its restricted ownership, the Scottish Deerhound became a rare breed after World War I.

This breed made its way to America in 1886 and today the Scottish Deerhound ranks 154th among the breeds registered by the American Kennel Club(AKC).

In Australia, the deerhounds are used to hunt kangaroo and wild boars, while in the United States they are used to retrieve games like coyotes, wolves as well as rabbits.

Temperament & Personality

The Scottish Deerhound is a gentle, polite and well-mannered dog. They are very loyal and devoted and so mix well with children too giving them a great company.

They are quiet, dignified and docile and very friendly in nature. They love to be around people and hence they do not get along well in homes where they are left on their own.

The deerhounds rarely bark so they do not make good watchdogs or guard dogs owing to their friendly nature with strangers.

Scottish Deerhound Puppy

As a puppy, the Scottish Deerhound is active and more mischievous and playful.

Early Socialization and exposure to different people, sounds, and sights at a young age ensure that your Deerhound Puppy grows up to be a well-rounded pooch.

The Deerhound is a fairly active dog and so needs regular exercise to remain fit and healthy.

Despite its calm and quiet nature, this breed is less suitable for apartment dwellers.

Regular walks to nearby parks for an hour or so every day keeps them playful and happy.

Care: Exercise, Grooming and Health Issues

Exercise

This is a very active breed that needs to be taken out on a daily basis. They enjoy long walks and runs, making an excellent jogging companion.

Always keep in mind that they have an instinct to chase so do not let them off the lead in an unsafe area.

Deerhound puppies need plenty of off-leash exercise in a safely fenced area to develop their bones and joints properly.

While it’s interesting and breathtaking to see a Deerhound in action, it’s heartbreaking to see him injured in the chase or hurt other animals he is chasing.

So proper care and a watch is a must!

Grooming

Scottish Deerhounds are average shedders. They have a thick coat which is on an average 3-4 inches long, harsh and wiry.

Regular brushing the coat of the Deerhound with wire slicker brush will be great to stimulate the circulation and removal of dead hair and skin from the coat.

This will enhance the distribution of the natural skin oils and the shine on its skin. Remember to brush in the direction the hair is growing. To give the final makeover use a metal comb — known as a greyhound comb — to get rid of the tangles.

Bathe your deerhound when it gets messy to remove all dirt, dust, and unwanted odor and tidy him up.

Other grooming needs include trimming the nails regularly, dental care, and cleaning eyes and ears with soft cotton balls.

Since deerhounds have floppy ears it’s important to clean them twice a week to avoid ear infections.

Health Problems

This enormous canine is a healthy and active dog breed, however, like all other dogs, they are prone to certain health issues.

Some of the common health problems faced by the Scottish Deerhound are:

Gastric Torsion or Bloating

Cardiomyopathy

Allergies

Osteosarcoma (bone cancer)

Hypothyroidism

Deerhounds can be dangerously sensitive to anesthesia and certain drugs. If you wish to own a Scottish Deerhound take the information from responsible breeders to know about specific health concerns within the breed.

As this is an exceptionally big dog, guardians need to consider the larger feed, medicine and boarding bills they entail.

Training

Though Deerhounds are gentle and docile indoors they are tough to train due to their lazy and laid-back attitude.

Training them will be moderately easy for experienced owners. They will gradually and slowly respond to the sessions at its own pace.

To make the training sessions interesting and playful you can try new techniques and tacts so that they don’t get bored easily.

Make sure you provide its basic obedience training early on, and should also start early socialization when you get it.

To keep them upbeat offer plenty of treats, rewards, and encouragement.

Feeding

What you feed your dog with is an individual choice, but working with your veterinarian/breeder, in the beginning, will be the best way to get an idea and determine the frequency of meals for a Deerhound Puppy or best adult diet to increase his longevity.
